Chapter 34
Once they arrived at the hospital, Shane didn’t enter while Abigail and Wendy stuck close to Nina.
She knew that they were afraid she’d try to pull some kind of trick, so they hovered over her like hawks. Their constant surveillance put her on edge.
She couldn’t pull out her phone to check for updates. Although Lisette had assured her earlier that everything should go smoothly, she still didn’t know for sure.
What if something went wrong? What if the doctor refused to cooperate?
Her temples throbbed as anxiety built up. Walking into the exam room felt like walking to her execution.
To her surprise, Lisette was already there.
“I got it. I’ll take this over now.”
Lisette grabbed a stack of specimen samples from the desk, nodded at the doctor, Deidre Colley, and turned to leave.
As she passed Nina and the others, she looked slightly startled. “Nina? What are you doing here? Are you here for a follow–up checkup?”
“Yeah.” Nina forced a shy smile and kept it brief.
Lisette didn’t pry. She just mentioned that she was busy with work and had to run. But right before leaving, she shot Nina a quick wink. That small gesture finally eased all the tension in Nina’s body.
Lisette had stayed behind just to let her know that everything was handled.
With that reassurance, Nina cooperated fully with Deidre, and the exam went by without a hitch.
While waiting for the results, Deidre flipped through Nina’s medical history and spoke gently. “Your health isn’t in the best shape, especially your reproductive health. You’ll need to be extra careful.”
“Got it.”
Nina nodded obediently.
“And…” Deidre hesitated, then turned to Abigail. “Are you family?”
“We are.” Abigail waved dismissively, her tone firm. “We’re all family here. Just say what you need to say.”
Deidre looked hesitant, then glanced at Nina. She was waiting for Nina’s approval. It was, after all, her personal medical information.
Nina pressed her lips together and looked at Abigail.
Abigail avoided her gaze. Her expression was warm, but her voice left no room for argument. “Nina, I’m worried about you. There’s nothing you can’t tell me.”
Worried about her?
Nina’s lips curled in a bitter, self–mocking smile. She knew better. Abigail just didn’t want to step away because she was suspicious.
“Go ahead, doctor.”
She ultimately figured that there was no point in thinking too much about the matter. Dwelling on it would only make her feel worse.
With Nina’s permission, Deidre continued, “Your uterus isn’t in great condition. The lining is very thin. From what I see, your menstrual cycles have always been irregular. You’ve been on medication, but if you ever want to have kids…”
Deidre hesitated before adding, “Once you lose the chance, that’s it. You won’t be able to get pregnant again.”
Nina caught the implication immediately. This pregnancy wasn’t an issue, but after this, she wouldn’t be able to conceive anymore.
Lisette had already warned her about this, so she remained calm. She simply thanked the doctor politely.
But Abigail and Wendy understood Deidre’s words to mean that Nina was completely infertile.
Both women were visibly shocked. Abigail’s frown deepened. If this news got out, it wouldn’t be good for Nina
She thought that Nind would lose any value as a potential marriage partner without the ability to bear children. And to the Lawson family, that would make Nina nothing more than a burden. David would never let that slide.
Just then, a nurse walked in and handed over the test results.
The paper clearly stated that Nina wasn’t pregnant.
As they stepped out of the exam room, Nine turned to face Abigail and Wendy, her expression calm.
