Chapter 35
“Now, do you believe me?” Nina asked. She smoothed out the test results before slowly folding the paper.
Abigail looked troubled. She was at a loss for words.

Wendy, on the other hand, had a strange expression.
She couldn’t believe that Nina actually wasn’t pregnant. But at the same time, knowing that Nina couldn’t have kids meant that the Smith family would never accept her. If that were the case, Yvan definitely wouldn’t want her either. She considered that this outcome was strangely in her favor.
Shane walked over and snatched the test results from Nina’s hand.
She pressed her lips together and didn’t resist, letting him examine the report. She didn’t think that there was anything on it that could make the situation go wrong.
As expected, Shane’s dark eyes held an unreadable look after reading it. He didn’t say a single word. He simply and casually tore the report into pieces and tossed it into the trash.
“Are there any other issues?”
Nina glanced at the trash can before shifting her gaze back to him.
Shane’s eyes flickered briefly to her stomach, his voice cold as he said, “Dr. Dale will be here tomorrow.”
Her face went completely still. It was as if she were stuck in mid–air, unable to move or catch her breath. She forced herself to ignore it and instead turned to Wendy.
Wendy, feeling uncomfortable under her stare, glared back aggressively.
Nina ignored the intimidation and smirked with a hint of provocation. “So… shouldn’t you be apologizing now?”
Wendy’s face went rigid. The thought of saying sorry to Nina utterly disgusted her. It instantly made her face sour.
“What’s wrong?” Nina teased when Wendy stayed silent. “Or are you backing out?”
“You’re the one who’s a liar!” Wendy snapped, furious. Then she quickly turned pitiful, clinging to Shane’s arm. “Shane, do you hear how she’s talking to me? She’s being so
mean ”
She clearly didn’t want to apologize, so she played the victim instead. Her eyes were full of fake innocence.
Shane’s sharp gaze landed on Nina.
“Don’t play favorites, Mr. Lawson.”
Nina scoffed, tilting her chin up slightly. “She said it herself. A promise is a promise. Keeping your word is basic decency. Or do you want people thinking that the Lawson family doesn’t know the meaning of integrity?”
“Apologize.” Shane withdrew his gaze from Nina and spoke calmly to Wendy.
Wendy’s eyes instantly welled up with tears. She bit her lip, stunned.
She hadn’t expected Shane to actually take Nina’s side.
“Shane.” Abigail’s face darkened as she called out disapprovingly. “What are you doing? We’re all family. There’s no need for this nonsense.
“If everything’s settled, we should just go home. What’s the point of an apology? You’re getting more and more unreasonable.”
Although she scolded Shane, her displeased gaze was directed at Nina.
Nina lowered her eyes, shutting down any emotions stirring inside her.
Shane knew that Abigail thought that he was defending Nina.
Before she could dwell on it, he explained, “The Smiths hold shares in this hospital. Whatever happens here, they’ll find out soon enough. This was a show for them.”
“Mom, do you really want the Smith family to think that Wendy isn’t qualified to be the future lady of their family?”
When Wendy heard that, she clenched her teeth and practically shouted at Nina, “I’m sorry!”
Her voice was so loud It nearly shattered Nina’s ears.
Nina chuckled and said, “Apology accepted. But I never said that I’d forgive you.”
Before Wendy could even start her tirade, Nina turned and headed straight for the parking garage. Behind her, Wendy’s tace went dark.
