Half an hour later, Lisa was getting inpatient
She slapped Mark across the face,
“Why isn’t the here yet? Are you two playing me?”
Mark’s head snapped to the side from the blow, blond seeping from the corne of his mouth as he hastily explained:
“Maybe she’s stuck in traffic.. F’ll call her again.”
The phone rang again.
This time Mark’s voice was full of urgency
“Honey, why aren’t you here yet?”
I lowered my voice, pretending to be nervous:
“Babe, the police just told me they’ve located Lisa. She might know you reported her and come to the hospital to find you. When she does, stall her. don’t let her escape.
“What are you talking about-
Before Mark could finish, Lisa snatched the phone and smashed it to the ground.
The phone instantly shattered, pieces flying everywhere.
“Mark! So you’re the one who got me wanted by the police!”
Lisa glared at him, looking ready to tear him apart.
Mark tried to scramble off the bed to escape, but was shoved back by one of the men.
His body slammed heavily onto the hospital bed, making a dull thud.
The bed frame even shook with the impact
“April is making this up… I didn’t report you. mmph!”
His words were cut off as one of the men stuffed a sock in his mouth.
Lisa waved her hand: “Beat him!”
The men immediately surrounded him, fists raining down like hailstones,
Mark tried to curl into a ball to protect himself, but it was useless.

Mark seemed to have broken more ribs.
He shook in pain, veins bulging on his forehead, but with his mouth gagged, he couldn’t even scream.
~Only muffled whimpers escaped:
“Hit harder! What, you haven’t eaten today?”
Lisa’s lips curled into a crue) smile, her eyes filled with satisfaction.

However, as soon as the opened the door.
She was caught red–handed by the police,
Mark was pushed back into untensive care
This time, his condition was more critical than before.
The doctors did their best
But his internal organs were ruptured in multiple places, blood loss was sever, and ultimately the rescue efforts failed.
In his final moments.
Mark’s last wish was to see me one last time.
I went.
The Mark on the hospital bed had been beaten beyond recognition, barely resembling his former self.
When he saw me enter, his eyes suddenly brightened, like a final flicker before death.
He struggled to raise his hand, reaching toward me.
“Honey. I love you”
I stood still, the corner of my mouth lifting in a mocking smile.
I mouthed three words.
“Go! To! Hell!”
He understood.
His eyes instantly dimmed.
His body convulsed violently once.
Blood suddenly gushed from his mouth and nose.
His hand fell limply.

Lisa’s life was over too. She was charged with intentional injury causing dear prostitution, and multiple other crimes, timately, she received the death penalty for her combined offenses.
Standing at the courthouse entrance, I looked up at the sky, the sunshine was lilliant.
The future road for me is still long.
