Chapter 8 The noble lady

The moment the door opened, one appeared awkward, the other breathtakingly beautiful. Lucy was holding a large bouquet of roses, the flowers were too heavy, and she looked a bit embarrassed. Meanwhile, the person who opened the door. “You’re here, just put the things inside,” the woman said gracefully, her voice warm and elegant. “Alright.” Through the gaps between the 99 roses, Lucy barely managed to glimpse her face. Emily was dressed in a simple, fitted, sleeveless black dress—completely devoid of any hint of pregnancy. Truly, she lived up to her reputation as one of the top socialites in Tampines. This was their first meeting. Lucy didn’t dare to make direct eye contact with her and obediently carried the flowers and gift inside. What she hadn’t anticipated was the number of people in the room. Christopher was playing cards with his friends in the living room. The layout of the house was identical to the one upstairs, but the decor was different—this place exudes warmth and comfort, a proper home. Upstairs, on the other hand, had a cold and minimalist style. “Chris, why did you make her carry such a massive bouquet? You’re going to crush her under its weight,” Emily said softly, trailing behind Lucy as she gently reproached the man in the living room. The tone—one of casual familiarity—clearly marked her as someone close. “Just leave it here, thank you for your hard work.” Emily said politely, gesturing for Lucy to put the flowers on the dining table. The once lively living room abruptly fell silent. “You really had her come?” “Didn’t you all want to meet her?” Christopher’s dark eyes swept over them, his indifferent tone carrying a hint of rebuttal. The group collectively sucked in a breath of surprise. Meanwhile, the atmosphere in the dining area had turned peculiar. “What’s your name?” Emily looked at her, looking like a hostess. “Lucy Wines,” Lucy had to look at her, then lowered her gaze and replied. “Oh, right, Lucy. My apologies, I hadn’t heard Chris mention you before. It’s always been through others, so I didn’t quite catch your name. Can I call you Lucy?” “Mm.” Lucy nodded in agreement. Between women—especially those who fancy the same man—hostility is often palpable. From the moment Lucy entered, she had sensed Emily’s subtle animosity. But now, with the divorce agreement signed, she was also in the position of a secretary, and… Christopher warned her not to let him teach her how to work. “I’m Emily Russo. Let’s formally get acquainted.” Emily reached out her hand, looking friendly. The distance between them was just a little too far, yet everyone in the living room was discreetly observing and listening. “Hi, I’m Mr. Dale’s secretary, Lucy Wines.” She looked at Emily’s delicate hand, taking a small step back and formally introduced herself. But she did not shake hands. Emily was a little displeased, but thinking that Lucy knew she was a secretary, she smiled again, “You don’t need to be so formal. The Dale family owes you, and I’m Chris’ girlfriend. How the Dale family treats you, I’ll do the same.” Her words were clearly a declaration of ownership. Lucy smiled. “My work isn’t done yet. Mr. Dale tasked me with preparing the flowers and gift, but I believe that a girlfriend’s gift should ultimately be chosen by her boyfriend. So, this gift was prepared by me personally. I hope you won’t find it lacking.” After saying that, she was about to leave. Emily looked at the perfume box on the table, then smiled faintly. “You’re quite thoughtful. It seems I’ll have to rely on you more to help me plan things in the future. Of course, Chris had already prepared a gift for me. The others just wanted to tease you to see if you’d follow through.”
