Chapter 19 Tension in The Office
“Mr. Dale.” Lucy called out. There was no sign of Mr. Dale anywhere in the office building and seeing him again so soon made her feel uneasy.
Christopher emerged, he had changed into a neat black suit that emphasized his tall frame as he approached her with graceful strides. Lucy instinctively stepped back, unable to meet his gaze.
Christopher realized that Lucy had quite a temper, but the way she averted her eyes respectfully showed manners. She must have excelled in etiquette classes when she was younger.
Irritation bubbled within him, he deliberately moved closer. Lucy had noticed him approaching, so she tried to keep her composure despite her heart racing and took another step back.
He finally stopped and gazed down at her. His voice was calm and commanding, “Everyone, dismissed. Lucy, come to my office.” He had singled her out.
Lucy lowered her head and answered, “Yes” Moments later, only she and the assistant remained.
“Mrs. Wines, should I help you put your suitcase away?” the assistant offered.
“Yes, thank you.” She replied gratefully, then cast a glance at the office door. She then approached the door and knocked.
“Come in Christopher’s cold voice responded, echoing off the walls.
She stepped in. Christopher was standing by his desk, focused on a document. He then glanced at her and said, “You are at the company, leave your childish behavior behind.”
Lucy remained silent. She hadn’t even said anything, and he already assumed she was being childish.
“There’s no room for spoiled little girls here, only professional secretaries. If you can’t handle your job, I will-” He suddenly paused.
Lucy’s heart skipped a beat. What would he do? Have her fired? That would be perfect–she would happily show him just how childish she could be. –
“I will squeeze every last bit of work out of you. Christopher slowly approached her, leaning down to whisper the threat into her ear with a faint smile.
Lucy felt his breath brush against her ear. Instinctively, she stepped back. Christopher’s expression darkened, clearly displeased by her retreat. She always backed away from him, and it frustrated him.
He only leaned in slightly. What was the big deal? She was still his wife. She could be out late in secretive places drinking coffee with other men, yet with him…….
“Come back here.” Christopher commanded abruptly, clearly annoyed. Lucy kept her head down, nervously twisting her fingers–a habitual gesture when she was anxious.
“I said, come here.” He repeated. Finally, she lifted her eyes to meet his gaze. “I can hear you just fine from here, Mr. Dale.”
There was no way she would move closer because being near him made it hard to breathe and it made her mind wander too far.
He also shouldn’t get so close. Was he unaware he was treading on dangerous grounds? Between a man and a woman, once boundaries were blurred, it was essential to maintain some distance.
“You hear Mr. Dale’s words, but can you hear your husband’s?” He suddenly pressed, closing the gap between them.
She instinctively stepped back again, yet Christopher kept advancing. Lucy’s heart felt like it was about to leap out of her chest. He was relentless. Eventually……. she was cornered.
She was dressed in her sportswear, her back pressed against the wall behind her, not cold but uncomfortably firm.

She watched as their clothes brushed against each other, and at that moment, she held her breath. Christopher also noticed the closeness, but for some reason, he leaned in even further until he felt no gap between them and questioned, “Why aren’t you stepping back?”
“Mr. Dale, please behave yourself.” She managed to remind him as her voice trembled and her eyes glistened.
“Mr. Dale can behave.” He murmured, “But your husband doesn’t have to.”
