Chapter 21 Insistence On Divorcing
A floral tea suitable for pregnant women? Lucy paused at the thought. She had never been pregnant and didn’t have any pregnant friends to consult, so she was uncertain.
Lucy didn’t feel it was her responsibility to worry about what tea she drank. Besides, she had no intention of staying at this job.
Dragging her suitcase behind her, she prepared to leave when the assistant called out, “Mrs. Wines, you’ll need to get Mr. Dale’s approval before you can go.”
Not wanting to inconvenience the assistant, Lucy sat down for the time being. However, after 10:00 am, the assistant went downstairs. She immediately seized the opportunity, dragging her suitcase into the elevator to leave.
Just as she turned around inside the elevator, she noticed someone rushing out of the office nearby. Lucy’s anxiety spiked. She hoped he wasn’t looking for her.
“You didn’t put the divorce paper away?” Christopher asked, breathless as he reached her.
“Wasn’t it you who put them away?” Lucy replied, confused.
“The matriarch fainted when she found out about our divorce.” Christopher explained. Lucy’s heart sank. She assumed he had handed the papers to the lawyer.
The two hurried to the hospital, where the matriarch was still receiving oxygen. Upon seeing them, Hayley’s expression turned dark with fury. She scolded them firmly in the hallway. “Why would you leave the divorce paper lying around?”
Lucy lowered her head in guilt, unsure of how to express her remorse.
“It was my fault. I left them on the coffee table and forgot to take them.” Christopher interjected, covering for her.
Lucy looked up, doubting her ears. He hadn’t shifted the blame onto her. He could have easily done so, just as he had once left her to face the Dale family alone years ago.
Tears filled her eyes at the unexpected emotion rising within her. Old, painful memories surfaced in her mind, one after the other.
“Madam, the matriarch wants to see Mr. Dale and Mrs. Dale.” A nurse said softly as she emerged from the ward.
Hayley finally calmed down, though she shot a sharp glance at her son. Her voice softened, “When you go in, speak to the matriarch with care. Agree with whatever she says.”
Christopher remained silent, Lucy also felt that it was the right course of action.
“Lucy, can you handle that?” Hayley asked her directly, her tone both gentle and firm.
“Yes, I can.” Lucy replied, nodding.
“You know how strong the matriarch has always been. This news about your situation has deeply affected her. None of us wants to lose her because of your marital issues right?” Hayley continued, taking Lucy’s hand in hers.
Lucy looked up at her, startled and terrified. Lose the matriarch? Could their marriage threaten her life? Lucy nodded, sorrowful, “I understand, Hayley.”
Hayley felt relieved and released Lucy’s hands, “Good. Go on, then.”
Inside, the two stood beside the matriarch’s bed. She looked frail, with an oxygen tube aiding her breaths. Her hand trembled as she reached out.
Though her voice was faint, Lucy leaned in by the bedside, gently placing her hand in the matriarch’s. Lucy held it delicately, afraid of hurting her, and said softly, “Matriarch, I’m here.”
“Lucy, you’ve suffered.” The matriarch murmured, her voice weak. Lucy didn’t know how to respond. She thought perhaps
