Chapter 28 Listen to Lucy’s Words
Would you like a cigarette, gorgeous?” Patrick opened a sleek metallic cigarette case and offered it to her.
“No, thank you. I don’t smoke.” Lucy replied politely. Patrick then closed the cigarette case and put it away.
Christopher’s gaze fell on her empty teacup. Noticing the staff had poured tea for him and Emily before leaving, he shot a sharp look at the server.
“Lucy can have tea as well, right? Grady asked, quickly catching on to Christopher’s intent.
“Yes, I can.” Lucy responded without hesitation.
Realizing his oversight, the staff member hurried over, pouring tea for her without any delay.
“You don’t need to come back tomorrow.” Christopher said after the tea was poured.
Everyone turned to Christopher in surprise. The staff member looked nervous and began apologizing profusely. “I’m sorry, Mr. Dale. I’m sorry, Mrs. Wines.”
“I’m fine.” Lucy quickly interjected, glancing at Christopher.
“Leave.” Christopher ordered again.
The staff member bowed in apology before leaving hurriedly. With so many people present and a considerable distance between them, Lucy refrained from saying anything further.
Emily, however, lightly grasped Christopher’s wrist. “Why are you so harsh? He’s a fresh graduate, inexperienced, and probably doing his best. Besides, Lucy wasn’t upset.”
“That’s no excuse for neglecting a guest.” Christopher replied coolly.
“But what if he’s struggling financially and needs this job? Lucy, don’t you think you should say something?” Emily questioned.
Suddenly, all eyes turned to Lucy, as if her silence could dictate the staff member’s future.
“Why are you all looking at her? This is my decision, not hers.” Christopher interjected.
Lucy had intended to respond, but the sudden attention made her reflect on Christopher’s actions, realizing they weren’t entirely unjust. After all, a server in a private room should attend to all guests properly.
Soon, Mr. Carter, the manager, arrived to personally address the situation.
Christopher gave only one instruction. “From now on, follow Mrs. Wines‘ request here.”
“Yes, understood.” Mr. Carter acknowledged, promptly refilling Lucy’s wine glass and prioritizing her needs.
Lucy felt confused, as did everyone else.
Emily, suppressing a wave of sadness, smiled faintly. “Lucy is one of us now. It wouldn’t be right to neglect her in the future.”
“I’ve already instructed the rest of the staff.” Mr. Carter replied. “As per Mr. Dale’s orders, Mrs. Wines will have decision- making authority here.”
The atmosphere in the room grew heavy with silence. Emily felt a twinge of bitterness, even she lacked such privileges.
After dinner, Emily turned to Christopher. “Christopher, I’m feeling a bit tired. Can you take me home?”
“Okay.” Christopher agreed.
You’re not staying for a game or two?” Patrick asked, wanting some private time with Christopher under the pretext of playing cards.

Lucy returned Emily’s smile with a faint one of her own. But as the three stood in the elevator, it felt oddly cramped.
When Christopher received a call, he stepped out of the elevator and turned to Emily, who held onto his arm. “I need to take her to the hospital to see the matriarch first. I’ll arrange for someone to take you home.”
“I understand. Of course, The matriarch is more important. I won’t keep you.” Emily replied sweetly. “But could you come to my place afterward? I’d still like to talk to you for a bit. Please?”
Emily’s voice was soft and pleading as she gazed at him, mixing understanding with an alluring charm.
