Chapter 30 Side by Side
The driver stepped aside, allowing Christopher’s tall and composed figure to stand in front of her as if offering assistance in getting out of the car.
It was a gesture of politeness, yet she lacked the courage to take his hand. Instead, she smiled and said, “Thank you.”
Without extending her hand, she lowered her head under his gaze, clutching the fabric over her chest as she exited the car.
The driver quickly circled back to a nearby spot to wait for them.
Christopher stood against the wind, watching her as she walked by, not daring to lift her head. She spoke softly and cautiously, “Let’s go. It’s late. The matriarch will get tired from waiting.
As she walked past him, he finally lowered his hand, silently mocking himself. Who said she liked him? Christopher turned forward, striding confidently with his long legs to match her pace beside her.
However, Lucy found it difficult to accept his closeness. No matter how much her heart ached for him, physical contact was no longer an option for her.
He…… belonged to another woman now. That woman had just told her to send him back.
When they first met, conversations flowed easily. But now…….
This marriage had created a distance between them. From the start, theirs had been a nominal marriage. That would never change now or ever. Lucy was resolute, they would divorce soon.
Emily was pregnant. In the first three months, it didn’t show, but as time passed, her belly would grow noticeably.
With Emily’s determination, she wouldn’t allow the divorce to be postponed for long.
And him? What was he thinking?
Lucy couldn’t shake off the curiosity about his thoughts.
“The matriarch just fell asleep not long ago. Before dozing off, she said she would be happy just knowing the two of your came. You can head back early.” The caretaker said outside the ward.
Lucy turned to look at Christopher, who nodded slightly, signaling for the caretaker to leave before saying, “Let’s go back.”
“Alright.” She didn’t want to disturb a sleeping elder. Besides, he was probably eager to return to someone waiting for him.
On their way back to the entrance, she took the lead again, while he followed closely behind, maintaining a careful distance.
She had called ahead, so by the time they reached the hospital entrance, the driver had already parked the car.
Their phones rang simultaneously.
Christopher glanced at Lucy before stepping outside the car to answer, “Hello? You’re still awake?”
Lucy stayed outside too, glancing at the caller ID and suddenly remembering something important. She quickly responded, “Hello? I’m sorry, I forgot.”
“Where are you now? There are only fifteen minutes left before the last song.” The person on the other line said.
I’m at the city hospital.” Lucy replied.
“Get here as quickly as you can. I’ll wait for you at the entrance.” Before she could reply, the call ended. Looking around, she realized taxis were scarce at this hour.
After finishing his call, Christopher turned to her. “Why aren’t you getting in? What are you looking for?”

As she continued to back away, she replied, “To a concert. I promised a friend. Don’t forget about Emily. Goodbye.”
Just then, she spotted a taxi approaching and was about to dash toward it.

“Where are you going?” Unexpectedly, his strong, warm hand gripped her slender wrist. Surprised, she looked at his hand and then up at his face.
“I haven’t clocked out. How can you leave early? Get in the car.” His tone was firm and commanding.
“But…… Lucy said.
“Tell the driver where to go.” Christopher replied. Once she got in the car, Christopher followed, squeezing in beside her. As panic set in, he spoke decisively, “The stadium.” Lucy quickly turned to relay the location to the driver, feeling Christopher’s gaze on her.
For reasons he didn’t fully understand, he couldn’t shake the feeling that the person on the other end of her call was extremely important to her. Só important that even he, her husband, felt sidelined.
The car soon arrived at the stadium. Lucy rushed inside, where a female staff member was waiting. As soon as they met, they joined hands and ran in together.
“Mr. Dale, are we leaving?”
