Chapter 8
Caleb’s eyes raked over me like a buyer appraising merchandise.
He had a satisfied smile. “Madelyn, you belong to me now.”
He glanced at Grace, his expression darkening, saying to me, “If that old hag gives you any trouble, I’ll help you get rid of her.”
Grace rose on trembling legs, desperate to escape this nightmare.
The truth had finally dawned on her. Caleb was the one who had tortured Eliana.
But she lacked the courage to confront him, choosing instead to direct her rage at me.
In her mind, I was still somehow responsible for Eliana’s fate.
Eliana’s terrified gaze fixed on something behind Caleb. Following her line of sight, I found myself staring at Zoey.
Zoey observed Eliana’s pitiful state with an unsettling smile. “Great. Now Mom can’t run away anymore.”
Her eyes shifted to me, filled with confusion.
“Aunt Madelyn, would you like to end up like Mom? I can help make that happen!” she said.
A chill ran down my spine at her childish tone.

Before I could process this disturbing thought, Caleb grabbed my wrist, trying to drag me toward the door.
“Hands up and don’t move!” A commanding voice rang out, stopping Caleb in his tracks.
Police officers swarmed in, forcing Caleb to the ground. Everyone present was detained for questioning.
I glanced at the phone propped by the entrance, revealing a satisfied smile.
The angle had been perfect for livestreaming everything that had just transpired.
I’d started the stream the moment Grace arrived, simultaneously calling the police.
My entire conversation with her had been a stalling tactic, buying time until they arrived.
The internet had exploded while we waited for the police.
[I have been following this story for a month. Can’t believe there’s more!]
[This kid is terrifying. She’s clearly violent.]
[Everyone in this family except the younger daughter seems toxic. The husband must be behind all this.]
The speculation ran wild online.
The police questioning brought up the earlier phone call. “Ms. Madelyn Meyer, did you file a report about your sister’s attempted murder?”
