Chapter 19:
Jack handed Emma tissues, saying, “Stop crying. Wipe your tears.”
Emma took them, hastily drying her eyes.
Jack asked, “When’s the divorce?”
Surprised by his question, Emma stammered, “Brother, aren’t you angry?” Jack frowned. “Why would I be angry?”

Emma licked her dry lips: “Aren’t I embarrassing you? Shaming our family? Making
it hard to face the Fosters?”

Jack looked exasperated, like he wanted to see what on in Emma’s head.
But seeing her distress, he held his tongue.
“Why should we owe the Fosters anything? Don’t they know what kind of person James is? I’m being nice not confronting them. I don’t understand why you feel.
guilty.”
Relieved by his response, Emma answered, “Day after tomorrow, when James
returns.”
Jack sighed: “You know what James told Mom? He said you found someone else
and wanted divorce.”
Emma had to laugh at the absurdity.
James had cheated first, yet accused her of cheating.
“What’s next? Are you keeping the baby?” Jack asked.
Emma touched her stomach: “Yes, I’ll raise it alone.”
Jack smiled rarely: “Good. Have the baby I’ll give a big gift.”
Emma laughed too.
Jack continued: “Stay at Sarah’s for now. I’ll handle Mom.”
“No need,” Emma shook her head firmly. “I’m working in London soon. I won’t be
back much.”
Jack was quiet before saying: “Whatever makes you happy.”
Emma said goodbye and returned to Sarah’s place.
Sarah apologized: “I’m sorry dear. If not for me, you wouldn’t have been hurt.
today.”
Emma disagreed: “Don’t apologize. Without you, I wouldn’t know what to do.”

They smiled and hugged.
The next day, Emma got the job offer. If the divorce went smoothly, she’d start her
new job soon.
Her mood improved briefly until Jack called.
“Your ex is going crazy. He’s causing chaos at our house trying to find you. You
better come see.”
Emma’s head throbbed: “What’s he doing?”
“He’s demanding we produce you or he’ll keep making trouble. Mom can’t take it
anymore.”
Emma gritted her teeth: “What’s his point? He doesn’t want the divorce?”
Jack paused: “Seems that way. Aren’t you divorcing tomorrow? Didn’t you discuss
it?”
Emma sighed: “I guess I didn’t give him a chance to discuss.”
She decided to return home and make the divorce clear to James.
