- 16.
Like I thought, Mark took Lily to the hospital.
He told her, “Get an abortion. Jeff Jiang isn’t
worth it.”
Lily refused. “This baby is all I have. My
parents kicked me out. If I don’t marry Jeff,
what am I gonna do?”
Mark grabbed her hand. “You don’t need a
man. I’ll take care of you.”
Lily nodded. “Okay, I’ll rely on you. Don’t leave
me.”
After the surgery, Mark rented her an
apartment.
The Richard family’s housekeeper, Mrs.
Davison, told Mark, “Lily’s used to my soup. I
should make it for her.”
Mark said, “Thanks.”
Mark’s girlfriend, Crystal, came back. She was pregnant, and she wanted to get married.
Lily found out and said, “You promised you
would take care of me. How can you do that if you marry Crystal?”
Mark said, “I’ll take care of you. I can’t never
get married, can I?”
“My name isn’t on the Richard family’s
records. Why can’t we be together?” Lily
grabbed Mark’s hand. “I know you have
feelings for me.”
Mark hugged Lily. He was torn.
He and Lily weren’t blood related, and she
had been kicked out of the Richard family.
But Richard and Susan wouldn’t approve.
He stroked Lily’s hair and said, “Let me think
about it.”
Mark couldn’t make up his mind. Then, he
heard that Mark and Crystal were engaged.
Mark started seeing Lily less often. When she
called, he said he was busy.
He was avoiding her.
Lily bit her lip. She came up with a plan to
force Mark to choose.
She bought a bottle of fake sleeping pills online. Mrs. Davison picked up her package
and took it apart.
When Mrs. Davison saw the pills, she asked,
“Are you having trouble sleeping? Don’t take
too many.”
“Okay,” Lily said. She was planning
something. She told Mrs. Davison, “Don’t
bring me soup tomorrow.”
“Okay,” Mrs. Davison said.
Lily asked, “How’s your son? Is he better?”
Mrs. Davison smiled. “He’s getting married. I’ll
give you some candy.”
“Okay,” Lily said. She didn’t notice the
sadness in Mrs. Davison’s eyes.
く
That night, Lily took the sleeping pills.
She was buying fake pills. There were three
doses in the bottle.
She took all of them.
After she swallowed them, she sent Mark a
message: “This is the last time I’m calling you brother. I hope we meet again in another life.”
She fell asleep.
She thought Mark would come to her.
She thought Mom and Dad would love her
again.
But she messed up.
Mrs. Davison switched the pills with real ones.
Mrs. Davison had been the Richards‘
housekeeper for a long time.
Two years ago, her son got sick and needed
surgery. She didn’t have enough money.
She asked Susan for money, but Lily said no.
Lily said, “We’re not a charity. What if she
<
runs away with the money? Besides, she’ll
never pay it back.”
Mrs. Davison’s son died.
Mrs. Davison hid her hate and planned her
revenge.
When Lily tried to commit suicide, she switched the pills and killed her.
