Chapter 12
Two days later, I returned home with my suitcase in tow and acted like I’d just been on a business trip. To my surprise, Jacob was waiting for me at home. He even offered to carry my suitcase inside for me.
“I can’t believe you’re finally home, baby. I missed you so much.”
I managed to dodge his hug, but Jacob rubbed his nose and tried to act nonchalant about it.
He claimed that we hadn’t been spending much time together and declared that we were having a barbecue dinner. He also claimed to have prepared everything beforehand in order to celebrate my return.
I stared at the charcoal on the table and inwardly chuckled. It looked like he wanted to kill me as soon as possible.
I told him I was tired and made up an excuse to postpone the dinner. Upon hearing this, Jacob handed me a glass of milk with a sour expression.
“Here–have some milk and go take a nap, baby.” His eyes were practically glued to me. It didn’t seem like I was in a position to refuse. So, I took the glass from him and drank the milk. Instantly, Jacob relaxed.
I could feel him watching me even as I laid on the bed. It felt like he was waiting for something to happen.
At that point, I was growing a little anxious. My eyelids began to feel heavy as I lay on the comfortable bed.
I bit my tongue to keep myself from falling asleep. I needed to stay awake no matter what.
About ten minutes later, Jacob finally left the bedroom after making sure I was fast asleep. Then, he tinkered with something in the living room before leaving the house.
Once I was sure he had left, I bolted upright in the bed. I could taste blood from having bitten my lip the whole while.
I got out of the bed and used my computer to send out a message. Then, I tried to open the door. However, it was only to find that it’d been locked from the outside.
I pressed on the handle and tried to force it open, but to my dismay, it wouldn’t budge.
Meanwhile, the air reeked of carbon monoxide. And to make things worse, my head was growing heavier by the second.
When I headed back to the bed for my phone, I realized that Jacob had discreetly taken it from me. He wanted to make sure I had no chance of surviving this ordeal.
I was running out of options, so I opened the window in an attempt to air out the room. In order to keep myself from inhaling too much carbon monoxide, I wet a towel with a bottle of water and used it to cover my nose and mouth too.
The sleeping pills started taking effect very quickly, so my brain was incredibly foggy.
I grabbed a toothpick and started to prick my finger with it. The sharp pain was able to clear my head for a brief moment.
I just needed to hold on for a while longer…
One, two, three…
