it to him.
“I’ve already signed. I told you, Caleb. Brianna started that fire, trying to kill me and our baby,” I said.
Without even looking at the papers, Caleb tore them up and tossed the pieces at me. “Do you have any morals left, Jeanette? You nearly killed an innocent person! I’ve done everything I can for you, but you’re treating me like this?”
Just then, a nurse’s voice came from the door, “Caleb, your mom’s awake.”
He immediately let go of me and rushed out of the room like a whirlwind. I mustered up what little strength I had left and followed him to Phyllis‘ ward.

Caleb dropped to his knees beside her bed, his body tense. “Thank goodness you’re awake, Mom. Jeanette only did what she did because she wasn’t thinking clearly for a moment. Please don’t hold it against her. It’s my fault for coddling her. That’s why she ended up like this.”
Phyllis stared at him, and the next thing I knew, she slapped him hard across the face.
Caleb wasn’t expecting it and went down hard. Clutching his swollen cheek, he looked at her in shock. “I know you’re upset, Mom, but Jeanette lost the baby. I can’t let her go to jail now. I–I don’t want her to get hurt.”
I snorted from the doorway. He actually believed Phyllis slapped him because she thought he shouldn’t have married me.
Phyllis narrowed her eyes, shooting Caleb a frustrated glare. “Stop with the nonsense! Jeanette started the fire? She was with me all day! How could she have done it?”
Caleb froze, stumbling over his words for a second before finally getting them out. “But Bri said Jeanette invited her over and started the fire on purpose to kill her.”
