Chapter 8
Chapter 8
Caleb started crying like a kid, but I didn’t feel a thing
“Caleb, you’re just going to take her word for it, huh? Sam hadn’t shown up, Phyllis and I would’ve burned alive. Then, you wouldn’t have cared enough to investigate our deaths. You would’ve just gone with the ‘tragic accident‘ story because Brianna told you to, right?”
He covered his face and went quiet for what seemed like forever. Finally, he signed the divorce agreement and left without a word. We agreed to meet in a week to finalize everything.
The day finally came, and I was feeling good. I’d gotten enough sleep, was wearing the new clothes I picked out, and was holding it together.
Caleb, though, looked like he hadn’t slept in days. When he saw me from a distance, his eyes were already red.
He got closer, and I could hear him fighting to keep his voice steady. “Jeanette, are we really-
There’s no going back, Caleb,” I cut him off.
He didn’t say anything else. He left me the house, the car, and the savings.
After that, I didn’t waste any time going after Brianna for arson. She wasn’t getting off that easy.
The next time I saw her, she was curled up against Caleb, crying hard, begging in a shaky voice, “I can’t go to jail, Cay. My parents just wanted me to be safe and happy. Please, you have to help me.”
Caleb shoved her away, stiff as a board. “Your parents wouldn’t want you turning out like this.”
She froze. When she saw me, she jumped up and yelled, “Why won’t you just leave me alone? Caleb’s already given you everything. Isn’t that enough? That fire was an accident! Why can’t you just let it go?”
I shook my head, then gave a small nod. “Caleb gave me his assets to make up for his mistakes. It’s got nothing to do with you. As for whether the fire was an accident, how about we check the security footage?”
Brianna was stunned, muttering, “No way. Everything burned down. How could there be footage? If you had it, you’d have shown it already. Why wait until now? Don’t try to pull one over on me. It was just an accident!”
I pursed my lips. “You don’t know about cloud storage, huh? Poor thing. Back then, I couldn’t show it because I was stuck being interrogated. I hadn’t found the right moment.”
Caleb closed his eyes, looking defeated while Brianna lunged at me in a blind rage.
I kicked her down and landed a few more solid kicks. “You always accused me of hitting you, right? Well, here’s what you asked for.”
She curled up on the floor, crying out for Caleb, “Cay, look-”
“What’s there to look at? You knew it was all going to end this way, so why set others up in the first

place?” His voice was flat.
