I looked at Caleb, fighting the urge to laugh. “When I say the baby’s gone, I mean our child died. I did everything to get Phyllis out of that fire, and then, you kicked me so hard that you killed our baby.”
Caleb’s eyes went wide with shock.
Brianna jumped in, saying, “Stop lying! You must’ve been carrying someone else’s kid, and you were scared Cay would find out. So, you found a way to get rid of it!”
A bitter laugh escaped me. “You seriously think I’d risk my life in a fire just to lose my baby? Brianna, you have a real knack for twisting everything. Is there any lie you won’t tell?”
Brianna was red with anger. She let out a hurt whimper. “She’s making stuff up again, Cay. I don’t know why she hates me so much…”
She tried to snuggle into Caleb’s arms, but he stayed still, his eyes fixed on my belly.
My health wasn’t the best. Caleb and I both wanted this baby so badly. He knew that, no matter how cold I came off, I’d never do anything to hurt my child on purpose.
“I never meant for things to go down like this, Jeanette. I just wanted to teach you a lesson. You’re the one who started the fire in the first place. You’re always so stubborn. I lost it. I’m sor-”
I shook my head. “I don’t want your apology. It’s too late for that. If you still think I started the fire, then lock me up and look into it.”
Caleb gritted his teeth, his voice faltering with fear. “I have no idea. I… You’re in such bad shape. You should just go back and rest for now.”
Brianna shook her head quickly. “Cay! She almost killed me! If my parents were still here, they’d never let me go through this… Mom, Dad, I miss you so much…”
Her heartbroken sobs made Caleb stiffen. I knew Brianna’s parents had saved his life once. Later, they died on the job, leaving her all alone.
Over the years, Caleb had drained all our savings to take care of Brianna–buying her a car, a house, and all sorts of luxury items. None of that ever bothered me.
