A burnt–out lightbulb? She’d call him to fix it. A clogged toilet? She’d be on the phone again. Even a tiny cut from chopping vegetables? She’d demand he take her to the hospital.

Brianna, still leaning on Caleb, looked up in shock. And for the first time ever, Caleb pushed her hand off. He grabbed my arm, eyes wide in disbelief.
“I dare you to say that again, Jeanette!” he snapped.
I held my ground, staring him down without flinching my voice icy. “I said we’re getting a divorce. I’m not asking for your opinion.”
His face contorted, and he grabbed my wrist like he was trying to break it. His voice dripped with anger.” Wake up, Jeanette. You’re the one who started all this. haven’t even blarned you yet, and now, you’re asking for a divorce?”
But as soon as he said that, his tone softened. “Alright. That’s enough. I’ll talk to Brianna, get her to understand, and have her write you a letter of forgiveness. Just stop causing a scene. I didn’t mean for the baby to die. I’ll protect you.”
