Chapter 19

Jack handed Emma tissues, saying, Stop crying. Wipe your tears.”

Emma took them, hastily drying her eyes

Jack asked, When’s the divorce?”

Surprised by his question, Emma stammered, Brother, aren’t you angry?Jack frowned. Why would I be angry?”

Emma licked her dry lips: Aren’t I embarrassing you? Shaming our family? Making

it hard to face the Fosters?”

was no

Jack looked exasperated, like he wanted to see what on in Emma’s head

But seeing her distress, he held his tongue

Why should we owe the Fosters anything? Don’t they know what kind of person James is? I’m being nice not confronting them. I don’t understand why you feel

guilty.”

Relieved by his response, Emma answered, Day after tomorrow, when James

returns.”

Jack sighed: You know what James told Mom? He said you found someone else

and wanted divorce.”

Emma had to laugh at the absurdity

James had cheated first, yet accused her of cheating

What’s next? Are you keeping the baby?Jack asked

Emma touched her stomach: Yes, I’ll raise it alone.”

Jack smiled rarely: Good. Have the baby I’ll give a big gift.”

Emma laughed too

Jack continued: Stay at Sarah’s for now. I’ll handle Mom.”

No need,Emma shook her head firmly. I’m working in London soon. I won’t be

back much.”

Jack was quiet before saying: Whatever makes you happy.”

Emma said goodbye and returned to Sarah’s place

Sarah apologized: I’m sorry dear. If not for me, you wouldn’t have been hurt

today.”

Emma disagreed: Don’t apologize. Without you, I wouldn’t know what to do.”

They smiled and hugged

The next day, Emma got the job offer. If the divorce went smoothly, she’d start her

new job soon

Her mood improved briefly until Jack called

Your ex is going crazy. He’s causing chaos at our house trying to find you. You

better come see.”

Emma’s head throbbed: What’s he doing?”

He’s demanding we produce you or he’ll keep making trouble. Mom can’t take it

anymore.”

Emma gritted her teeth: What’s his point? He doesn’t want the divorce?”

Jack paused: Seems that way. Aren’t you divorcing tomorrow? Didn’t you discuss

it?”

Emma sighed: I guess I didn’t give him a chance to discuss.”

She decided to return home and make the divorce clear to James
