Chapter 28
However, just as the thought surfaced, Aspen forced it down. She couldn’t cry in his arms. What gave her the right to seek comfort from him?
Aren carefully placed her in the passenger seat of his car, his gaze softening as he watched her cry. With a sigh, he said, “Stop crying. I’ll take you to the hospital.”
“Do I look pathetic like this?”
Aspen already knew the answer. Still, she let out a soft laugh dripping with self–mockery.
But Aren cut straight to the point. “There’s no need to act tough. If you want to cry, then cry.”
As soon as he finished speaking, he turned on the car’s speakers and cranked the volume to the max. Aspen curled up in the seat, wailing uncontrollably.
Aren said nothing. His eyes were filled with pain for her, but he remained silent as he drove steadily toward the hospital.
Even with the deafening music, he could still hear her heart–wrenching sobs filled with despair and sorrow.
Regret burned in his chest as his teeth clenched in frustration. If he had known this would happen, he would have come back sooner.
If he had returned earlier, maybe she wouldn’t have suffered like this.
Before long, they arrived at the hospital. Aspen had calmed down and stopped crying by then. She opened the door, ready to get out.
However, before she could do it, Aren stepped forward and scooped her up in his arms again.
“Aren, I can walk on my own. You-”
“Shut up. Just listen.” Aren grunted, carrying her straight inside.
The sharp scent of disinfectant hit her as soon as they entered the hospital, making her expression change slightly. She hated this smell. No–she loathed it.
The doctors and nurses quickly began checking her injuries. The moment alcohol touched her wounds, Aspen instinctively grabbed Aren’s hand.
Memories began surging like a tidal wave. They had met at aniversity. Back then, he had left to study abroad in his second year. The feelings they never had the chance to confess had remained forever unspoken.
Later,

had led her to Colin. Then, Sophie had come into her life. That hidden love had been buried deep in her heart, never to be mentioned again.
Aspen had thought they would never meet again. Even if they did, she had never imagined they would reunite like this.
She had never thought he would still be the same as before, unchanged by time. There wasn’t a single mark left by the passing years.
“Be gentle. She’s afraid of pain,” Aren murmured, his tone laced with helplessness.
He was tall and handsome, with a deep and captivating voice to boot–his presence made the young nurse’s heart
flutter.
Her movements instantly became gentler. Truly, the world was unfair.

Aspen looked away, chuckling softly, and slowly withdrew her hand.
Aren smiled as well. “You can still laugh?”
“What else can I do? Keep crying?” Aspen shrugged indifferently before adding, “I’ve cried too much already. I’m tired. I don’t want to cry anymore.”
“Miss, your ankle is fractured. Doesn’t it hurt?” the nurse asked in disbelief.
A fracture? Was it that serious?
Aren’s expression darkened. “How did it get this bad?”
“It must have happened when I was struggling earlier. It’s not too bad–it just needs some time to heal properly.”
