Chapter 30
“I regretted leaving back then. Now, all I want is to stay by your side,” Aren said. “Pen, you don’t have to respond, but please don’t push me away.”
Back then, he had been too stubborn, too afraid to speak up and that hesitation had cost him the person he loud. Years had passed, but his feelings had never changed.
The only person he had ever longed for was still her. This time, no matter what, he wouldn’t let her slip away again.
Maybe it was the sincerity in his voice, or maybe it was the way old feelings resurfaced, but Aspen’s heart, long frozen over, seemed to thaw just a little.
She had thought she was destined to have a cold, desolate life. She had never expected fate to bring her back to the one person she had once loved in her youth.
“Aspen, your daughter is dead, and yet here you are, cozying up to someone new?” Colin’s voice cut through the moment like a blade, cold and simmering with restrained fury.
He stood at the doorway with his arms crossed, his gaze filled with contempt as he looked at the two of them.
Anyone with eyes could see the subtle exchange between them and how the air was thick with lingering emotions.
Colin’s biting words shattered the warmth in the room. Both Aspen and Aren turned toward the door at the same time.
The moment Aspen saw Colin’s cold, indifferent expression, her heart twisted violently in pain. That one sentence pierced straight through her chest like a dagger.
She had imagined this countless times. If Colin ever found out Sophie was gone, would he regret it? Would he fee! even a trace of sorrow?
However, she had never expected this. He stood there as if nothing had happened, as if the little girl who had died wasn’t his own daughter.
“Leave. I need to talk to her alone.”
Colin immediately recognized the man sitting beside Aspen–Aren, the so–called brilliant senior from her university days.
Back then, people had gossiped about them being a perfect match, saying they were made for each other. Just the sight of them together again made Colin’s stomach churn with irritation.
Meanwhile, Aren didn’t even spare Colin a glance. His gaze remained on Aspen, waiting for her approval.
Only when she nodded did he stand up, ignoring Colin completely as he walked past him and stepped outside. He stopped just beyond the door, standing there quietly as if to give her reassurance.
“If Sophie knew what a fickle woman you are, don’t you think she’d be disappointed? Aspen, you know you have no way to keep pestering me now that she’s gone. And now you’ve already found someone new? Some habits really don’t change, do they?”
Colin stepped closer, towering over Aspen as his icy glare locked onto the emotionless woman on the hos
bed.
In his eyes, all of her sadness and grief were nothing but an act. It was just another cheap trick to gain a man’s
attention.
“Colin, Sophie is gone. And this… this is all you have to say?

“She was a sickly child. Even if she had lived, she would’ve suffered. It’s better this way. If you like kids so much, we can just have another one,” Colin said without hesitation, his voice utterly devoid of emotion.
Survival of the fittest–that was how the world worked. The weak were destined to be eliminated.
“Colin Fuller, are you even human? Sophie was your daughter! Your own flesh and blood! How could you say something like that?”
Aspen yanked the IV needle from her hand and stood up to slap Colin hard across the face.
“I really must have been blind to have loved someone like you!”
