Chapter 6 Are You Worth It?
Rosalie crossed her arms and opened the door again. The cool evening breeze swept into the room, dispelling the oppressive atmosphere that had lingered.
After a few seconds of silence, she turned back to look, only to find Nathaniel sitting leisurely on the sofa in the living room. His long legs were casually crossed, exuding an aristocratic elegance. He looked every bit the handsome, entitled man.
“Tomorrow’s the company’s morning meeting to review and discuss yesterday’s incident. Leonor will be attending as well, so keep that temper of yours in check. Don’t go looking for trouble.”
His tone was as domineering as ever, leaving no room for argument.
So he had come here for IronSpell Machines, but now, with his anger suppressed, it seemed his real purpose was to pave the way for Leonor.
Rosalie’s gaze locked onto his eyes—those eyes that could easily make anyone lose themselves. Her heart twisted painfully, her chest tight, her body trembling with emotion.
“What if I do want to cause trouble?” she asked, her voice low but defiant.
Nathaniel’s lips curled into a slight, amused smile, but the coldness in his eyes deepened.
Nathaniel said, “Apricotshade Manor is under my name.”
“Before we married, Grandpa promised to return it to me.” Rosalie’s hands clenched tightly, her eyes reddening from the strain.
That old house was the last semblance of dignity she and her mother had left. Did this man really intend to trample all over it?
Nathaniel said, “The market value is thirty-six million. Rosalie, do you think you’re worth it?”
His words shattered all the anger, resentment, and heartbreak she had been holding back.
She had forgotten that, in Nathaniel’s eyes, she was nothing more than a greedy woman who had used money to manipulate an old man and seduced him into her bed.
Her pain, her struggles, her reluctance—none of it mattered to him.
Rosalie forced a bitter smile, her clear eyes devoid of any emotion, as the tears in them evaporated. Her clenched fists slowly relaxed.
“Nathaniel, whether I’m worth it or not is no longer for you to decide.”
Nathaniel snorted coldly, “You have one day.”
With that, he slammed the door and left.
Rosalie’s pale hand clenched tightly again.
Her heart felt as though it was being torn apart, a wave of nausea rising in her chest.
She never expected that this third-anniversary gift would turn out to be so “special.”
After a long while, Rosalie returned to her bedroom and called Candice.
On the other end, Candice seemed to be in the middle of something noisy, with a man’s voice faintly heard in the background.
Ignoring it, Rosalie spoke loudly, “The job you mentioned before—I’ve taken it.”
She hung up, immediately blocking Nathaniel’s number and WhatsApp. Throwing her phone aside, she turned and went to wash up.

Later that evening, Candice finally returned, looking as if she were sneaking in.
When she saw Rosalie up and about, she tossed what she was carrying onto the table and plopped down on a chair, immediately starting to order food.
“Why don’t you go ahead and order a full-course banquet?” Rosalie teased, rolling up her sleeves as she headed for the kitchen.
She opened the fridge, only to be assaulted by a mixed odor that immediately made her stomach churn. Before she could close it, she dry-heaved.
Candice quickly handed her a glass of warm water.
“Thanks,” Rosalie muttered.
She took a sip, and then Candice’s voice, unusually soft, broke the silence.
“Rosalie, are you pregnant?”
Rosalie turned in shock, her mind going blank for a moment.
Though Nathaniel rarely touched her, when he did, it was always intense.
That night, when he returned from his business trip over two weeks ago, it had felt as if he wanted to kill her in bed.
She remembered that the condom had broken, and she had forgotten to take the morning-after pill.
Now, calculating the days, her usually punctual period was three days late.
Her face turned ashen.
What? Pregnant, at a time like this?
In a daze, Candice, already at the door putting on her shoes, suddenly stopped. She turned back and rushed to the bedroom, returning moments later with an open packet.
“You should take the test.”
Rosalie, wide-eyed, was at a loss for words. “How… how do you have these in your room?”
Candice’s face flushed slightly, her eyes narrowing in irritation. “What, can’t I have sex?”
Three minutes later, Rosalie looked at the test strip in her hand, the single line clear and unmistakable. She let out a long breath, but a faint sense of disappointment settled in her heart.
