Chapter 49
Evelyn couldn’t be bothered to respond to that remark
Phoebe was either stupid or malicious. How could a housekeeper sit back and let Phoebe, the Locke family’s goddaughter, do all the cooking for the family? It was ridiculous–unless Evelyn simply didn’t want to work anymore
While Evelyn silently grumbled, she heard Celeste’s voice at the kitchen door. “Fifi, why don’t you come to the living room and rest? I’ve seen you being busy in the kitchen since this morning.”
Evelyn’s hands paused as she washed the vegetables.
Evelyn had prepared broaldast herself. All Phoebe did was hand over a few plates and serve the food. Yet somehow, it now seemed as if Phoebe had been the one bustling around the kitchen all morning.
Feeling a bit disgruntled, Evelyn shot a glance at Phoebe. Evelyn caught her blinking a few times before she raised an arm, rubbing her eyes with her
elbow.
Phoebe replied, “I’m fine, Mrs. Locke. I’m used to it, really. It doesn’t tire me.”
“Did the onions get to you? Let me see,” Celeste said, stepping closer with a concerned expression.
Phoebe tried to keep her eyes open for Celeste, but tears still streamed down her cheeks from the sting of the onion. Celeste gently took the knife from her hand and said to Evelyn, “You handle it from here.”
She then took Phoebe by the arm and led her toward the living room. “Go sit and take a break. You’ve been working non–stop. You’re not here just to do chores.”
Celeste’s casual words hit Evelyn hard, and she felt a pang in her chest. Her eyes stung. Yet she rubbed them and continued working
Natalie finished her draft and went downstairs, carrying an enamel cup to fill with water. As soon as she entered the kitchen, she noticed something was off with Evelyn. She looked upset.
Natalie walked over to her, affectionately patting Evelyn on the shoulder. “Everything alright?”
Evelyn turned around and saw it was N
was Natalie.
Feeling too embarrassed to show her emotions, she forced a smile and said, “I’m fine. Just chopping some onions. They’re a bit irritating to the eyes. Natalie could see that Evelyn was forcing a smile, but she didn’t press further since Evelyn refused to explain.
She finished filling her cup and asked if there was anything she could help with. Evelyn shook her head, so Natalie took her cup to the living room. In the living room, Celeste and Phoebe were sitting on the sofa, chatting
Sering Natalie, Celeste waved her over. “Nate, you came at the right time! Come sit with us,”
Natalie placed her cup on the coffee table and joined them.
Celeste warmly took her hand and said, “I was just asking Fifi about her future plans. I would love to hear yours as well. I heard from Gideon that you only graduated from elementary school. Do you want to continue your studies, or are you thinking of starting work early?”
Upon hearing this question, Natalie recalled the original storyline. Celeste asked this question because at this point, Gideon had a spot available for further studies at Commonwealth College
With two goddaughters, giving g the opportunity to either one would hurt the other’s feelings. That was why Celeste was having heart–to–heart talks with them about their futures.
In the original story, the original subject wanted to get married, while Phoebe expressed a desire to continue her education.
The Locke family then planned to give the opportunity to Phoebe. However, when the original subject found out, she changed her mind and made a scen at home, also wanting the chance to study.
In the end, Phoebe voluntarily gave up the spot, winning the favor of the Locke family. Afterward, the Locke family felt indebted to her and helped her find a job
Two years later, when the college entrance exam
exams were reinstated, they even helped Phoebe find a tutor and got her into K
Kingston University.
That recommendation spot represented a turning point in the lives of the original subject and Phoebe. From then on, one became a top student at a prestigious university, while the other graduated from Commonwealth College with a devalued diploma
Natalie snapped back to reality. This time, instead of saying she wanted to get married early like the original subject, she said, “Mrs. Locke, I want to start working as soon as possible.”
