“Yes.”
Chapter 53
Shane got into his car swiftly, ignoring Susie’s small talk.
I saw him applying pressure to his temples. He must be having another bout of headaches.
I could no longer be by his side to help him massage his temples.
“Devon, did you think there was anything different about Allison?” Shane asked out of the blue in the silent carriage of the car.
Devon looked puzzled. Shane had been moody lately. Even Devon could not understand him.
“Mrs. Lundberg has become more and more reserved in recent years. Her laughter had become less.”
Shane shut his eyes and pressed a finger to his temple, massaging it. “Continue,” he said.
“In the beginning, she would still argue with you. However, she became reluctant to speak, let alone explain anything. There were many times when she would just stand in one corner and silently watch the interaction between you and Ms. Schultz.”
With a frigid expression, Shane asked, “Anything else?”
“You hated Ms. Schultz a lot at first, but for some reason, you started caring more about her. You would always cast Mrs. Lundberg aside for Ms. Schultz. The reason behind Mrs. Lundberg’s change was all because of you and Ms. Schultz.”
This was the first time ever that Shane did not refute. “Did I really cross the line?” he asked.
Having equipped himself with balls of steel, Devon continued, “As a bystander, I do think that you’ve been overly generous with Ms. Schultz. There were many times when unknowing strangers thought that Ms. Schultz was your fiancée instead. At the time, Mrs. Lundberg would stand just in one corner.
“Perhaps she had gotten hurt too many times that she no longer bothered to explain or argue and just watched on silently. Nonetheless, she still cared about you at the time. I think it was around three months ago that she really changed
“It was as if Mrs. Lundberg had changed into another person. She stayed at Children’s Home every day. The few times I did bump into her, she looked crestfallen.
“She had lost a few pounds. Even the wedding dress she wore on her wedding day was two sizes smaller. The stylist had to use safety pins on the back of her dress.”
Originally, the measurements of the wedding dress had been changed to Amber’s. In the short span of three months, I had lost around 22 pounds. The wedding dress was too big for me.
Even Devon had noticed it. Only my fiancé, Shane, was oblivious to everything.
“Three months ago.” Shane murmured. Suddenly, he opened his eyes and looked at Devon.
“Let’s go to the hospital,” Shane said.
The most drastic changes I went through began three months ago. He had always thought it was all a trick of mine to get his attention. But how could anyone have faked this for three months?
Even other people could feel that something was off.
What secret could the hospital possibly hide?
The hospital was filled with the piercing smell of disinfectant. Shane headed toward the VIP wing of the hospital.
He had not even gotten near the nurse station when he heard the discussion among them. “To be honest, I feel bad for Mrs. Lundberg. During the days when she was pregnant, Mr. Lundberg did not even care about her. He was actually here every day, and yet, he only cared about his
sister.”
“He did not even bat an eye at Mrs. Lundberg.”
“Rumor has it that she isn’t even his real sister. The two of them are not even related.”
“That is the worst. It’s no wonder Mrs. Lundberg did not keep the child. If I was her, I’d already die from anger.”
The moment Shane heard the word “child“, his pupils dilated.
As for me, I was as calm as the sea. Was he finally going to learn about my pregnancy?
“Oh, poor Mrs. Lundberg. I heard that when the miscarriage was happening, she crawled out of the ward on her own. She was even bleeding. She had to crawl all the way. She must have felt so helpless at the time!”
When they stopped speaking, Shane spoke up. “What child were you all talking about? Who was pregnant? What miscarriage?”
