Gary, Eugene, and Carl comforted Phoebe and told her to go upstairs. Then, they stood there in silence. Eugene stared at my photo, looking a little lost. “Did we… did we do something wrong?”
The other two nodded. Carl said, “She prepared all of this before her death… which meant she knew she didn’t have much time left. Do you remember what happened when we were younger? She said she saw countdown timers above Mom’s and Dad’s heads.”
Gary said, “This means she saw the timer above her head. That’s why she started preparing for her death.”
Eugene grabbed his hair irritably. “Why didn’t we notice this years ago, then?”
“Because none of us believed her. We thought she was a witch and a monster, not our family.” Carl’s words hit the nail on the head. It was too late for regret, though.
Eugene seemed to suddenly remember something. He dashed to my room like a madman and started turning the place upside down. Finally, he found the mended scarf in a box underneath my bed.

I’d patched the ripped scarf together, and the rough handiwork was enough to show how much trouble I’d gone through. I’d tried to put it back together while crying. I’d run out of yarn, so I’d used black thread to sew it together.
The scarf was back in one piece, but the black thread all over it were like deep cracks and crevices. It looked mended, yet there was no restoring it to how it had originally been.
