curious how Jack would spin this.
He knew exactly why.
His hand shot to the back of his neck, rubbing it like he could scrub away the guilt. Then he did what he always did–switched gears. “Mom, this isn’t the time to be guessing why Dad did what he did.
“You know how much he hates it when you overthink and ask too many questions.
“The doctor said he was brought in just in time. He’s not in any danger now.
“I’ve got to take care of Gigi. So, for now, you take care of Dad. The doctor said he’ll recover with proper care.
“Whatever the reason, just apologize to him. He’ll forgive you.”
How disappointing.
Sebastian hadn’t died after all.
“You really don’t know why he did it?” I asked. “Or do you know and just can’t bring yourself to say it out loud?”
Jack’s eyes flickered with panic. He cautiously asked, “Mom… did someone tell you something?”
I just smiled–a mocking, knowing smile.
Jack froze for a beat, then turned on his heel
“Mom, stop overthinking,” he mumbled. “I’m going to check on Dad.”
His footsteps faltered as he hurried after the doctor, gait unsteady.
Not once did he dare meet my gaze.
