Chapter 2
My heart skipped a beat at that moment. I wondered if Charlie would explain in front of outsiders.
But then his next words sent my heart plummeting.
Charlie said, “My mom isn’t as pretty as Lauren. All she does every day is cook and clean, looking all dirty and ugly. She’s just like a maid.” Reginald, who was still washing the cat, didn’t say a word in my defense.
I suddenly laughed, feeling a sense of relief.
I was wrong. I shouldn’t have expected any family affection from this cold–blooded pair, Reginald and Charlie.
I wouldn’t care about them anymore. If Reginald and Charlie loved Lauren, let them.
Three days later, when I was discharged from the hospital, I didn’t see a trace of Reginald or Charlie.
Well, I hadn’t expected them to pick me up anyway.
I asked if Reginald was available today, thinking that if he was, we could go to the Courthouse to get a divorce.

Chapter 2
Just as I finished packing my things and walked out of the hospital, Charlie called me.
As soon as I answered, his sarcastic voice came through. “Lauren’s cat is doing much better now. It’s all your fault for not handing over the money earlier. Otherwise, it would have recovered from its illness long ago.”
In his eyes, a sick cat was more important than me, his mother.
I wasn’t going to argue with him but just asked, “Is your dad beside you? Didn’t I arrange to meet him today?”

Immediately, Lauren’s voice came from the other end of the phone. “Oops, Michelle, I’m so sorry. The three of us got back to my place late after bathing the cat yesterday. We slept in and didn’t have time to pick you up.”
Reginald seemed to snatch the phone. “Why are you telling her all this? Michelle, you’re an adult. Can’t you come back by yourself?”
I said calmly, “I was planning to ask you to go to the Courthouse to get a divorce.”
“Can you stop being so unreasonable? I’m going to make DIY rings with Lauren and Charlie later. If you’re home, remember to iron my suit.” With that, he hung up the phone mercilessly.
Well, that was great. While they were out, I packed all my stuff into two large suitcases.
Chapter 2
As I was leaving, I saw the suit that Reginald had asked me to iron on the living room sofa.

I picked up a pair of scissors and cut it into pieces, just like my love for him.
He had time to go make DIY rings with Lauren but no time to
iron his suit.
I looked at the cheap ring on my finger.
It was ridiculous. I had once begged Reginald to make DIY couple rings with me. But he said it was useless and a waste of
time.
He just bought me a random one from a street vendor, and I’d been wearing it until now.
What was even more ridiculous was that the store they went to was exactly the one I’d always wanted to go to.
I saw the Instagram post from the store. In the video, the three of them were busily making rings.
Lauren kept wiping the sweat off Reginald’s face and also made a new silver necklace for Charlie.
Charlie immediately yanked off the gold necklace around his neck that I’d bought for him with my pre–marital savings.
He said, “This gold one Michelle bought is so tacky. Who knows if it’s real or not? This one you made for me is much prettier,

Lauren.”

I’d been thinking that even though Reginald had taken all the money in the family to support Lauren, the gold necklace around Charlie’s neck could be sold to cover his tuition.
But he just threw the gold necklace into the trash can.
After putting on the silver necklace, he closed his eyes and made a pious wish, saying, “I hope Michelle gets out of our house soon and Lauren moves in early.”
He was so impolite now that he even called me by my name.
I pushed my suitcases out the door, thinking, “Well, as you wish, Charlie. I hope you’ll still be this happy when Lauren moves in.”
