Chapter 16
“Of course I need to look out for you! I can’t just let you be fooled by some random woman!” Shailey said, her voice growing heated. The look she was giving Thandie was cold.
Warren refused to stand for that. “I’m not with Thandie to spite you. I genuinely think she’s a Ereat person. Spending time with her has given me peace. I’m happy-
“I said no!” Shalley interrupted him angrily. She put down her spoon with a loud clink. You’re coming home with me, Warren Gardner.”
Warren, who had tried to stay composed for David’s sake, stood up abruptly. “We’re not at home now, Shailey. You can’t just throw a tantrum and expect people to cater to you.”
“Warren, I’m just worried that you’re being deceived!”
“You keep saying that you have to look out for me. Tell me, what right do you have to control me? Are you a familiar stranger or my sister–in–law?”
He emphasized the last few years bitingly.
Shailey was caught in a dilemma. If she admitted that she was his sister–in–law, that would mean giving up their relationship for good and staying as family by marriage for the rest of their lives. If she denied it, then she would have no right to dictate Warren’s relationship.
The tension in the atmosphere was almost palpable.
David could tell by now that they were arguing over Warren’s love life. He gave Thandie an apologetic look before attempting to mediate. “Alright. Ms. Ralston, even if you think you’ve found Warren the perfect wife, you shouldn’t have been so hasty. You should hear what Warren has to say before making any decision.”
“No!” Shailey said, unyielding. “This is not up for discussion.”
Warren did not want to put David in an awkward place, so he picked up his jacket and apologized, “Sorry for ruining lunch. Please enjoy the rest of your meal. I’m leaving.”
He walked out without any hesitation, even turning down Thandie’s offer to see him out, telling her to stay and accompany David.
Once again ignored, Shailey was furious. Disregarding David’s attempts to calm her down, she chased after Warren. “Warren! Stop right there!”
Warren ignored her and walked faster.
Seeing that he was about to leave the neighborhood, Shailey sped up and grabbed his arm. Warren, please listen to me,” she pleaded, discarding her pride.
“How many times do you need me to say
this
but I don’t want to hear it!”
Shailey Ralston? I know what you want to say,

Their confrontation ended with Shailey forcibly dragging him into her parked car. She locked the doors, so even if Warren did not want to talk to her, he was still trapped in the confined
space.
“Haven’t you ruined my life enough?” he demanded, eyes red and voice shaking in anger. What else do you want? You’re not at home right now. Your antics won’t work here. If you don’t let me out right now, I’ll report you for illegal detention!”
you Shailey softened. She took a deep breath and said hoarsely, “I’m sorry. I just wanted to tell one thing. After you left, I finally understood that you’re the one that I’ve always loved. I don’t care who you love now. They’ll never get my approval. The only person who can stay with you for the rest of your life is me.”
Warren had never heard her like this before.
It was the first time she had shown him weakness, though her confession sounded more like a demand.
Warren found it ridiculous. He scoffed, “Shailey, are you sure you’re talking to the right person? I think you should be saying all this to Jacob instead.”
Shailey frowned, frustrated. “Can you stop bringing him up?”
“No, I cannot,” Warren said. “I’m wishing you a happy marriage with lots of children, Sis–in- Law. What do you possibly have against that?”
“That’s enough…”
“Or did you have a fight with dear old Jacob?”
Every sentence he said exacerbated her headache. Shailey’s breaths caught in her chest.
She wanted him to stop, but she couldn’t come up with anything to say. Frustrated, she snapped, “You-”
Before she could continue, Warren took the chance and pounded on the car window. “Help!” he yelled.”
A police officer on patrol was passing by at the same time. Noticing the commotion, he came
over.
Too late, Shailey realized that Warren hadn’t been bluffing. His warning wasn’t just an empty
threat.
The officer knocked on her side of the door, his depression grave. “Miss, please get out of the vehicle.‘
Reluctantly, Shailey unlocked the doors and stepped out, facing the police’s questioning alongside Warren. She tried to explain herself. “It’s just a misunderstanding, sir. You see, we’re a couple.”

She did not want to just be Warren’s sister–in–law, but her shifty attitude only heightened the police’s suspicions.
He gave her a scrutinizing look before turning to Warren for confirmation. “Is that true?” Coldly, Warren replied, “No. She’s my sister–in–law.”
