Chapter 18
Jacob was terrified, but he didn’t dare to run. He was drowning in debt at this point. If he didn’t get any money from Shailey, he would be dead meat when the debt collectors found
him.
Shailey was not at all surprised to hear Jacob’s name from the housekeeper. “Mr. Stratton smeared lipstick on him to create a misunderstanding with Mr. Gardner.”
Everything was clear now.
It was clear to adults what it meant to have lipstick smeared on one’s body–hickeys.
Jacob watched as Shailey ended the call. She turned away and signaled to Freya, who was standing nearby. “Deal with him. I don’t want to see him ever again.”
Freya understood immediately. She called for the bodyguards to seize Jacob, preventing him from getting near Shailey.
Shailley got into her car and drove quickly toward Warren’s current residence.
She needed to find him right now and clear up all the misunderstandings. Even if he refused to forgive her and get back together with her, it would still stop him from moving on with someone else so quickly.
But she was still too late.
She rang
callede doorbell for a long time, ver the house remained silent. Refusing to give up,
“Warren, it’s me!”
she
A door unlocked behind her. A disgruntled neighbor came out to check what the commotion was about. “Miss, please stop that. No one lives there anymore.”
Shailey froze. “Are they out?”
The neighbor shook her head. “No, they moved out not too long ago. The owner said something about going on a trip to get married to his girlfriend. Didn’t you know…”
Before she could finish, Shailey quickly turned and ran out.
She drove herself to the nearest airport. On the way, she kept calling Warren, though every call went to voicemail. He never answered.
Then, Freya called. “Ms. Ralston, Mr. Stratton owes a lot of debt. He was taken by debt collectors as soon as I sent him back
Shailey couldn’t care less about Jacob at the moment. Gritting her teeth, she said, “Send someone to the airport right now. Find Warren and stop him from leaving the country!”
“Yes, ma’am.”
“Oh, right” Shalley remembered something suddenly.
Back when Warren first flew to Melrand, she hadn’t been able to find his boarding information.
“He might not be using his real name. He has a foreign passport under the name Jeff Gartner.”
“Alright. I’ll check right away.”
But three days passed, and even though Shalley ordered everyone she could to search for him, Warren still remained elusive.
He had wiped his tracks even more thoroughly than before.
For three days, Shailey barely slept or ate. The news soon got to David.
Worried that she would harm herself, he called her. “Ms. Ralston…”
However, Shailey asked breathlessly as soon as she picked up, “Do you have news about Warren?”
“No,” David sighed. “I’m calling about you. You can’t keep going like this. You won’t last much longer. I don’t know what happened between the two of you, but he was right. He’s an adult now. He has the right to make his own choices and live his own life freely
In the dark room, Shailey quietly listened as David tried to talk sense into her. She heard every word–she just couldn’t accept it.
Warren had left for good this time. He hadn’t even told David where he was going. He really wasn’t going to give her another chance.
Meanwhile, in a quaint little cottage down by the countryside, Warren was reclining in the rocking chair with his eyes closed, soaking up the autumn sun. It had been a long time since the weather had been this good.
Thandie was cleaning his cameras nearby. Seeing him nodding off, she picked up the camera and snapped a photo.
Warren, always sensitive to the sound of a camera’s shutter, sat up immediately and leaned over. “Let me see. If you made me look ugly, I’ll cry.”
“Here you go.” Thandi handed him the camera.
Warren smiled with satisfaction. “You’re good. It’s nice. I forgive you.”
Glad that he was feeling happier, Thandie smiled as well. “Have you forgotten that I’m Mr. Keaton’s student as well?”
They talked and laughed with each other for a while.
Then, as the wind swept through the courtyard, Thandie remembered something. “I spoke to
