Daphne puffed out her cheeks, displeased by Elara’s words. “Lara, are you hitting menopause? You’re just saying that because no man loves you.”
Elara immediately put her phone away. She didn’t even want to call Benjamin anymore.
“Merida, let’s go upstairs.”
“Mommy!” A child’s voice rang out, making Elara’s heart skip a beat before sinking heavily.
She didn’t need to turn around to know who it was.
Merida spun around, eyes wide with surprise. “Beau!”
Beau sat in a wheelchair, bundled up like a tightly wrapped cocoon. His neck was secured in a brace, and he wore a knitted hat over his head.
He never liked wearing hats as they messed up his carefully styled hair. But now, with his head shaved and wounds still healing, he had no choice.
His face was pale, drained of all color, and his lips carried a bluish tint. He looked like a fragile, broken doll.
“Mrs. Fisher,” Mary greeted Elara nervously as she pushed Beau’s wheelchair forward.
“Beau, why aren’t you in the hospital? Are you okay? Does it still hurt?”
For Merida, any past grudges between them had long faded Seeing Beau in such a state, all she cared about was whether he was okay.
That was the innocence of a child. Even if Beau wasn’t her brother but just an ordinary classmate, she still would. have worried about him.
