Whenever Merida was upset, she would twist her backpack straps into knots.
“Mommy!” she called out,
She walked toward Elara as her two slightly loose and crooked pigtails swayed with each step. When she saw Elara, a spark lit up in her eyes, and her round rosy cheeks fted her previously drooping mouth into a smile.
She broke into a little run toward Elara, one of her pigtails completely coming undone. Elara crouched down, pulling the hair band that had slipped to the end of Merida’s hair and carefully redoing her pigtails.
“Did you have P.E. today?” Elara asked, puzzled.
She was sure Merida didn’t have P.E scheduled for the day, so why was her hair such a mess?
“We were rehearsing for the talent show this afternoon“. As she said this, Merida’s cheeks puffed out slightly, and the brightness in her eyes dimmed.
“Elara!” A woman’s voice called out from a distance.
Elara looked up to see Rosalie walking over while holding Paisley’s hand. Whenever this woman showed up, Elara knew trouble wasn’t far behind.
She noticed Paisley’s face was paler than paper, and as the child got closer, the dark circles under her eyes became unmistakably clear.
“Hi, Aunt Elara,” Paisley greeted softly, her lips as pale and thin as a flower petal.
Elara rummaged through her bag and pulled out a piece of fruit candy she always carried. “Are you feeling a little hypoglycemic?”
She handed the candy to Paisley, whose dark eyes fixated on it. Just as Paisley reached out, Rosalie pushed Elara’s hand away.
“What do you think you’re doing? Fruit candy is so unhealthy! You can’t give that to Paisley!”
Elara replied calmly, “She looks like she’s experiencing low blood sugar. Her lips have no color at all.”
“It’s just how Paisley is naturally! Pale lips make her look more delicate and endearing. What do you know?
Rosalie’s voice was sharp, but Elara didn’t want to argue. She simply handed the fruit candy to Merida instead.
Merida stepped closer to Paisley, avoiding Rosalie’s line of sight, and discreetly slipped the candy into Paisley’s pocket.
Paisley felt the movement and gently pressed her hand against her dress pocket. Rosalie’s strict control meant she never knew when she’d get a chance to sneak a piece of candy,
Rosalie turned to Elara with a gossipy tone. “I heard from Harold that you’ve become the vice president of your family’s company.
“Honestly, after all the effort you put into winning that math competition and gaining so much attention online, you end up joining a nearly bankrupt company as a vice president? Do you know what everyone’s saying about you?”
Elara replied calmly, “I’m no longer part of the Fisher family, yet you still keep such a close eye on me, Rosalte.”
Rosalie didn’t care what Elara said. She barreled on with her opinions. “I know you just want to satisfy your craving for being a CEO!

Rosalie smirked dismissively, as if Elara were spouting nonsense.
She glanced at Merida and said to Elara, “The school is holding a talent show next month. The girls in their class are performing Swan Lake, and my Paisley is the lead dancer!”
Elara knew Rosalie had brought Paisley over specifically to brag about something.
