Elara hurriedly said, “Goodnight.”
On the other end of the line, Leonard hung up. Setting her phone down, Elara turned to Theodore and pinched his cheek.
To her surprise, his skin was so firm she couldn’t get a proper grip. When she tried to pinch his cheek, there was barely any flesh to grab.
Theodore tilted his face up, causing her fingers to land on his chin instead–making it look like she was harassing
some innocent man.
“When did I bully the elderly? And Mr. Fisher isn’t that much older than you! If he’s old, what does that make you?
Theodore caught her slender wrist and nuzzled his face into her palm like an affectionate cat. He then said, “I’m in my prime–full of vigor and vitality! Leonard’s always in that wheelchair, frail as can be!”
His eyes sparkled like tempting black grapes as he suddenly turned apologetic.
“Did I interrupt your call with Leo? Sorry, I won’t do it again! I just missed talking to you too much!”
Elara chuckled again. “Don’t be jealous of Mr. Fisher. He’s just my teacher!”
“Got it, honey.” Theodore agreed readily. “Your wish is my command.”
Elara took a deep breath, feeling strangely lightheaded in the enclosed car. When the driver stopped at her apartment, Theodore turned to find Elara with her eyes closed, head tilted against the seat.
“We’re here, Elara,” he whispered, reluctant to wake her.
“Mmm.” Her drowsy response came, but she kept her eyes shut
The alcohol had filled her head with leaden sleepiness.
“Let me walk you up.”
Theodore opened the car door and helped her out. Blinking heavily, Elara rubbed her eyes and let out a long yawn
“With the Jones Group matters settled for now, I just want to get some proper sleep.”
“Mm,” Theodore responded.
Elara failed to notice the shadow that crossed his face.
“You can leave me here.”
Theodore stopped at the foot of the stairs before asking, “When do you plan to break up with me?”
Elara froze mid–step. Before she could answer, he suddenly advanced several steps, forcing her to stumble back until her back hit the wall, with nowhere to retreat.
For the first time, she sensed something dangerous emanating from Theodore–a caged beast finally unleashed. It seemed like he could be this domineering even with her.
His warm, heated breath brushed against her cheek. The hallway lights dimmed abruptly. As visibility between them faded, the atmosphere grew thick with tension
When he lowered his head, his lips grazed something coold soft–a strand of Elara’s hair.

Theodore spoke first. “Whatever you choose, I’ll remain by your side. Use me however you wish–as a blade against your enemies, or as stepping stones beneath your feet…”
He drew a deep breath before declaring, “Let’s end our contractual relationship here.”
Elara’s eyes flew open wide..
