Rosalie’s lips curled into a mocking smile that didn’t reach her eyes. “Of course, you’d get selected no matter what you perform. I mean, having a school board chairman for a father does wonders.”
Nearby parents exchanged knowing glances.
Elara asked calmly, “Ms. Fisher, did Harvey say something to you?”
“Not at all,” Rosalie replied.
“Then are you just spreading rumors?” Elara continued. “My daughter’s performance earned the arts department’s approval. What does that have to do with the Fisher family?”
Rosalie lifted her chin, her gaze turning condescending. Since Elara’s divorce from Harvey, Rosalie had looked at her like royalty observing an ant beneath her feet.
“The arts teachers only approved it because Harvey’s on the board.”
Elara simply smiled: Rosalie was clearly trying to pick a fight, but Elara wasn’t interested in proving herself. She had no intention of arguing over whether her daughter’s opportunity to perform was the result of favoritism from Harvey.
Instead, she countered, “Ms. Fisher, is your apology letter ready?”
Rosalie froze for a moment, caught off guard by the abrupt shift in topic. But she quickly collected herself as she’d prepared for this.
“Of course, it’s ready! But let’s see if your daughter can actually make me read it!”
Seeing Rosalie take the bait, Elara’s voice grew even gentler “Let me review the letter first. Who knows what you might say onstage otherwise?”
Her mild tone disarmed listeners. Perhaps it was Elara’s soft features that made her seem non–threatening.
Rosalie scoffed arrogantly. “What? Don’t trust my writing?”
Elara extended her hand “Hand it over.”
Rosalie pulled a stack of papers from her bag.
Elara took the offered apology letter, scanned it, and remarked, “The format is wrong here. Incorrect word choice there. Subject–verb order reversed.
“Ms. Fisher, did you fail elementary school?”
Rosalie’s face paled. “What mistakes?”
Elara turned away. “Let’s have the homeroom teacher give it a go.
At that moment, Bridget approached and immediately groaned upon seeing Rosalie arguing with Elara again. Rosalie thrust the papers at her. “You tell me if there’s really anything wrong with my apology letter!”
After reviewing it, Bridget pointed to one line. “This sentence is indeed grammatically incorrect.”
Elara smiled pleasantly. “I’m not satisfied with this apology letter. Since the competition hasn’t started yet, why don’t you rewrite it properly first?”
Rosalie exploded. “Your daughter only got this performance slot because of Harvey’s influence! She might not even win!”

Elara’s pink lips curved up in a smile. “I’m just looking out for you. I wouldn’t want you embarrassing yourself in front of all these parents with this poorly written letter.”
Her gaze shifted to Paisley, who immediately lowered her head upon meeting Elara’s eyes.
Remembering how Rosalie had beaten and scolded her for accepting candy from 1 fearfully as she hid behind Rosalie.
before, Paisley shrank back
Noticing this, Elara averted her eyes, just as several bodyguards escorted Xavier into the auditorium.
