- 11.
Lily jumped and dropped the coffee on her
foot.
The cup broke.
She screamed and fell on the floor.
Her hand landed on the broken glass.
Mark tried to help her, but Richard pushed
him away.
“You’re bullying your sister?”
Richard slapped Mark.
“Pow!”
Mark stumbled back, stepping on Lily’s hand.
<
Mark and Lily fell together.
Lily’s hand was bleeding. She screamed.
Mark helped Lily up. He was angry. “Dad, why
did you hit me? We were just inviting Maggie
to dinner.”
He was lying.
I pointed at the trash can. “You invite people to dinner by throwing their phone in the trash? By throwing coffee at them?”
I took my backup phone out of my desk and
played a recording of Mark. “Dad, listen to
what Mark said.”
Mark looked shocked. “You recorded me?”
I smiled. Lily was hot–tempered. It was a
miracle she waited so long to come after me.
I knew she would bring Mark.
So, I stayed late to wait for them.
When Mark and Lily walked in, I turned on the
recorder.
Richard played the recording. Mark’s voice
<
was smug.
Richard was already angry, but the rest of the
recording made him shake with rage.
He said he hoped I was a homeless kid
begging on the street.
Richard turned to Mark. “I can’t believe you’re
my son! You’re evil!”
Richard gave me back my phone and called
the company’s CFO. “Freeze all of Mark’s
accounts.”
“Dad…” Mark begged.
Richard said, “I don’t want to hear it. When
you’re ready to apologize to Maggie, I’l|
unfreeze your accounts.”
Mark glared at me.
The way he looked at me was terrifying.
I remembered the car accident.
Mark was crazy. He would do anything.
But I wouldn’t be scared anymore.
I was going to kill him before he killed me.
