- 12.
Mark’s accounts were frozen, and he
disappeared for a while.
Lily was trying to win over Jeff Jiang.
I was working hard, staying late.
I was getting paid three times my normal
salary, so I had to earn it.
Richard and Susan said they were going to
give me 10% of the company as
compensation.
I looked at the company’s financial
statements.
Richard Enterprises‘ revenue was high, but
they hadn’t made a profit in three years.
They were burning money.
If they kept going like that, the company
would go bankrupt.
I said, “If you want to make it up to me, give
me cash.‘
Richard and Susan agreed.
They gave me cash for 10% of the company.
I was rich.
One night, I was working late, and the elevator stopped on the sixth floor.
Richard’s office was on the sixth floor. He
was old and tired, so he didn’t stay past 8
- PM.
It was 11 PM. No one should be in his office.
I was curious, so I took the elevator to the
sixth floor.
Richard’s office door was open a crack. The
lights were on.
I tiptoed over to the door and was about to
open it.
The lights went out, and the door opened.
Lily looked surprised. She hid the files behind
her back.
“You never work late. What are you doing in
Dad’s office?” I asked.
She quickly said, “Dad asked me to get some
files. What’s it to you?”
“It’s late. Dad should be sleeping. What do
you have there?” I asked.
“Mind your own business,” Lily said. She
folded the files and put them in her purse.
Before she could fold them, I glanced at
them.
They were formulas.
The formulas were backed up in the R&D
department. These files were probably
something else.
“Are you gonna give them to Jeff Jiang?” I
asked. I tried to grab the files.
Lily pushed me away. “Get out of my way!”
She ran into the elevator and closed the
doors.
I watched Lily go. I thought, “Someone in the
family is a thief.”
Jeff Jiang probably asked Lily to steal the
formulas.
Lily was trying to get Jeff back.
Jeff Jiang was her ticket.
The Richards weren’t her real family, so she
had to protect herself.
I called Richard, but he was on the phone.
He was probably sleeping. Who would be calling him?
Probably Lily.
She was going to lie.
I went to the security office and watched Lily
deleting the security footage.
She was on the phone and smirked when she
saw me.
“Dad, I went to the company to get
something, and I saw Maggie leaving your
office.”
“She stole a file from your office and deleted
the security footage.”
“She’s always working late. That’s what she’s
up to.”
She was lying and destroying evidence.
She was smart.
I didn’t know if she was wearing gloves,
otherwise she would leave fingerprints.
She forgot about something else, the consequences of stealing the file.
Lily hung up and said, “Good luck, Maggie!”
Then she left.
