Chapter 10 The Man Who Suddenly Appeared At Home In The Middle Of The Night

Lucy had a few drinks. It was already midnight when she returned home. When she opened the door, the room was pitch black. She was about to reach for the light switch, but instantly withdrew her hand. What she touched was… Her heart raced as she stepped back and turned around. “Have you been drinking?” The man’s cold voice contrasted sharply with the warmth of his chest. “Mr. Dale?” Lucy recognized the voice but still felt a lingering sense of fear. “Who did you drink with?” He didn’t answer but instead advanced step by step. Lucy’s legs grew weak. Reflexively, she turned around and leaned against the door to steady herself, but soon, the familiar scent of his cologne enveloped her. She was tense, her hands falling from her chest to press against the door. “A friend.” “What kind of friend?” He continued to press, his tone calculated. His approach was suffocating her breath. But he was asking too many questions. Lucy looked up at him with a puzzled expression. She had just adjusted to the dimness of the room. But his eyes were still dark and unreadable, leaving her without any sense of security. “Just… a regular friend.” She lowered her head, her voice barely audible. His gaze seemed as if it could see through her thoughts, unravelling everything inside her. How could she let him see that her heart was racing from his proximity, almost on the verge of losing control? How could she let him know that, despite everything, her heart was still moved? They were already divorced. She felt a sharp pain in her chest, but then his hand pressed against the side of her face, she was forced to steady her breathing and meet his gaze once again. She suddenly remembered that he had been downstairs celebrating Emily’s birthday. He had given her the house, hadn’t he? Emily lived downstairs, and today was her birthday. Why was he here? “Do regular friends need to hide things so thoroughly?” he asked again. Lucy looked at him in shock. “What?” “So signing the divorce agreement so quickly wasn’t because you felt guilty, but because you have someone else you like?” “No, that’s not it.” She raised her head to meet his gaze, impulsively retorting. She had never liked anyone else. “Then what is it?” “That is, that is…” Her voice grew weaker and weaker. Faced with his relentless questioning, she almost forgot that they were already divorced. She almost forgot that he already had someone to protect for the rest of his life. What was she supposed to explain to someone like him? “So what if I like someone else? We’re divorced,” she reminded him. Although she wasn’t as domineering as he was, it didn’t mean she would let him lead her around. There was no need to answer such a personal question from him. “We haven’t gone to the Civil Affairs Court yet, we’ve only signed the divorce agreement. Lucy, don’t let anyone know that the young mistress of the Dale family is putting a green hat on her husband, okay?” “…” A cold feeling gradually spread over her. She didn’t understand his meaning. She was angry. Although the one who falls in love first was often the more vulnerable one, that didn’t mean she had to let him humiliate her. His cold and piercing gaze seemed to imply that she had betrayed him, betrayed their marriage. But clearly, for the past two years, she had been staying at the Dale family’s mansion every night. How could she have betrayed him? At 23, she once thought that love was a pure and simple thing, but now… She gathered her courage and suddenly asked, “Why are you here so late?” “Mm?” Christopher had just been lost in thought, his gaze on her, and her stubborn expression made him think of other things. “Emily lives downstairs, this place…” “This is the private residence I gave you.” He interrupted her. Right, this was the private residence he gave her, and he still remembered it. She lowered her head, unable to hold back a muttered remark, “I’ve never heard of a man giving his ex-wife a house upstairs from his current girlfriend.” He suddenly moved closer. “What did you say?”
