“The moment the matriarch laid eyes on the divorce agreement, she became emotional and tore it up, declaring that she would never allow the two of you to divorce.” Mrs. Sherburn explained.
Like the rest of the staff in the Dale family, Mrs. Sherburn was aware of Lucy’s parents‘ situation.
Over the past two years, Lucy had been obedient and well–mannered in the Dale family. She treated the staff with kindness, and they had accepted her as the rightful Mrs. Dale long ago. How could anyone else take her place?
But didn’t the matriarch realize that a torn agreement could be printed again?
“Mr. Dale, it’s almost 9:30 pm. Aren’t you coming back? I’ll have to contact the matriarch if you don’t.”
After dinner, just after 9:00 pm, Lucy was sending a message when she heard Mrs. Sherburn’s voice nearby.
Not even ten minutes later, the doorbell rang. Lucy turned to see the person who had brought her back earlier appearing once again. She instinctively stood up, lowering her gaze, too timid to meet his gaze.
Christopher walked over to her. “Is there gold on the floor?”
“What?” Lucy thought she had misheard him. But as she looked up, she was caught in the deep, unwavering gaze he held on
her.
His expression grew more frustrated as though he was trapped by some strange emotion. He turned and sat on the sofa, picking up the remote control. Lucy’s phone vibrated briefly. She glanced down to check it.
Christopher lifted his gaze. “Sit.”
“Okay.” She complied, positioning herself as far away from him as possible.
Christopher studied her for a while, a faint smirk playing on his lips. Why was she acting as if he were some kind of wild beast?
He was……
Her phone vibrated again, this time numerous times in quick succession..
“Lucy.” Christopher called out.
“Yes?” Lucy looked up from her phone, her expression signaling for him to continue.
“Who’s messaging you?” He decided there was no need to beat around the bush.
It was already 9:30 pm, and whoever was messaging her this much at this hour had to be someone she was close to.
Suddenly, it occurred to him. In nearly three years of having her number, she had never sent him a single message.
“A friend. Just a platonic friendship.” She quickly clarified, remembering his previous interrogation.
Although her explanation didn’t sit well with Christopher, he refrained from pressing further. Would asking whether it was a male or female friend make him seem like he was meddling?
Not long after, Mrs. Sherburn came downstairs. Upon seeing Christopher back home, she approached him.
*Mr. Dale, Mrs. Dale, the bath is ready. I added some calming herbs so you two can have a restful night.” Mrs. Sherburn’s tone was playful, Lucy thought. Were they expected to share the same bathwater?
Christopher’s gaze remained fixed on her. She appeared compliant and submissive on the surface, but her eyes revealed the quick wit she always tried to conceal.

An inexplicable tension filled Lucy, but she remembered Mrs. Sherburn’s words. Regardless of the situation, Christopher was the head of the household. Naturally, Mrs. Sherburn’s attention revolved around him.
Keeping her head down, she said, “You…… go ahead.” The word “bath” felt too suggestive, so she omitted it.
“Go where?” Christopher casually rested his elegant fingers on his thighs, tapping them lightly as if playing an intricate melody.
Lucy inadvertently noticed his fingers, which seemed to dance with precision and grace, before quickly lowering her gaze and replying, “To bathe.”
“If I heard correctly, Mrs. Sherburn just stated we should bathe. Together.” Christopher teased.
