As she lay in bed, sleep eluded her. She tossed and turned, disappointment gnawing at her until she finally fell asleep late into the night.
Her feelings for him were complicated, but then his words softened her heart, “No man lets a woman sleep on the couch.”
The next morning, the dining room was quiet, occupied only by Mrs. Sherburn and Lucy. Lucy picked at the breakfast Mrs. Sherburn had prepared, her gaze lowered, chewing slowly in silence.
Mrs. Sherburn observed Lucy and let out a sigh. “Mrs. Dale, this can’t go on. How could you let Mr. Dale go have breakfast with another woman?”
“It’s fine, Mrs. Sherburn.” Lucy responded with a gentle smile, her tone calm.
In his eyes, she was the other woman. The one he had chosen, the mother of his child–the one who would share his future. Lucy, on the other hand, felt the weight of inevitably. She would become the past he didn’t want to remember.
Despite everything, Lucy held a sense of gratitude for his gesture of allowing her to sleep in the bed. With a quiet resolve, she finished her breakfast and left for the hospital.
At the building entrance, she noticed Christopher’s Porsche pulling out of the parking lot, and she instinctively stepped back.
The car came to a halt beside her. “Lucy, let’s leave together.” a voice called out.
“No need, I’ll take the cab.” Lucy replied thoughtfully.
It was Emily, seated in the passenger seat. “It’s no trouble. We’re heading the same way.” Emily insisted.
Lucy didn’t want to hitch a ride with them. “Thank you, but my friend is already waiting for me outside the neighborhood.” She nodded politely and walked away.
Moments later, she watched as his Porsche disappeared down the road, the wind making her pants cling to her skin, leaving her momentarily dazed.
“Lucy?” A familiar voice cut through her reverie. Turning, she saw a car approaching. “Get in, I’ll give you a ride.” It was Nick, her neighbor.
For now, Lucy is temporarily settled at the Dale Corp. As expected, Emily spent her day in Christopher’s office.
After work, Lucy stood outside the building, waiting for a ride when Christopher’s car pulled up again.
Emily leaned out the window and greeted her warmly. “Mrs. Wines, care to join us for dinner?”
“No thank you. I have plans with a friend.” Lucy replied, maintaining her distance from the car.
Emily’s smile persisted. “Really? That’s too bad, I was hoping we could eat together.”
“Thank you, but no.” Lucy reiterated firmly, stepping back. Just then, a man in a suit rushed out of the office building, “Lucy, want to grab dinner with me?”
“Sure.” She said kindly, though she didn’t recognize him.
Christopher’s gaze sharpened on the man. His mood darkened. He exited the car abruptly.
‘Christopher.” Emily called, bewildered, but he didn’t stop.
Lucy and her colleague stood frozen, the tension palpable as Christopher marched toward them.
With every step he took, Lucy felt her heart sink. Confronting her, he stared coldly at the man, “Which department are you in?”

Lucy found herself at a loss of words, confused by his sudden anger. It was just dinner with a coworker, wasn’t it?
Noticing her silence, Christopher’s gaze turned back to the man. “Where were you planning to eat?”

“A……. street food stall.” The man stammered, his confidence faltering under the intense scrutiny. He was about to inquire about Christopher’s identity but stopped short as Christopher grabbed Lucy’s arm.
“She’s not the kind of person who eats at roadside stalls. Find someone else to join you.”
