Chapter 40: Is That A Threat?
*you are not stealing anything from me. You are playing with William jest like he is playing with you.” Wendy stated after a moment of silence. She crossed her hand over her chest to make berueld look more intimidating. “As for why I am talking to you, I have respect for my deceased father and William’s father who had promised each other to marry their daughters.”
Sarah’s eyes flickered with conflict and the hung her head. Wendy look the opportunity and contimed on that stream of thought
“Yes, we have a marriage part, and you? Has Willum lold his father about you? Has Chairman Colton approved of your relationship?” she paused, smiling victoriously. “Then, just imagine what your position İL“
This is not the medieval times, Miss Stone. Your father is dead
m has no idea who you are. You are a little girl who knows nothing about the world but acts like she is on top of it.” Wendy scoffed. She could no longer hold her anger. “William set up this interview so that I could get a job in the company? And what about you? Why are you here? Because you got kicked out of your teaching pig and someone took piry on you? Group, you are the charity case it makes sure I don’t look awful when I start working.”
Sarah added, knowing this was the truth. “You’re right. Lam the charity caso. Wendy was about to say something when Sarah interjected “Just like your birth gives you certain privileges, my ‘trashy‘ bith also makes people pity me.“”
She sucked in a deep breath.“1 had forgotten the power my sob story held until you reminded me, Miss Stone. But now, I will see you at Colton Group and I assure you, I will be working as your boss one of these days.”
Before Wendy could protest, Sarah had strutted out of the washroom. She sneered and looked over her shoulder for one last time before going to the waiting room. The conversation had been long and most of the other candidates had already finished their interview.
She waited for half an hour more when her name was called. She looked up and without a shred of anxiety, walked into the interview.room.
There was a row of five interviewers. After a long day of interviews, they were done and wanted to go to their respective offices. Moreover, it was sprung on them. All except for George. He had done what he wanted, now he only wanted to go to his home and watch television. He would dump all the work on William
The only obstacle between him and peace was this last candidate. He looked over her resume and his brow arched. He had rarely seen such a well–put–together resume before. It was as if it was tailor–made for his company. And that was a plus point in his mind. Still, it didn’t cancel out the fact that she had no connections to speak of and had a record of academic mediocrity. She probably wanted to stay in college to teach students
“I see that you taught at your university before. What happened there?”
Sarah had anticipated this question and prepared the answer. She cleared her throat and spoke of how teaching was fulfilling, but that she was more interested in doing the grunt work and Learning how to strategize for corporate leaders. Moreover, she had a first–hand experience in client servicing and third–party mediation. She spoke so well that the previously sleeping interviewers started to walk up.

Sarah picked up on their hesitation and bit her lip. She mulled over if she should speak her mind. If it had been her before William had appeared in her life, she would have tucked her head and accepted date.
But right then, the realized that if she can’t speak out, she would be angry at the rejection and she would be without a job. She was the only one losing in that case

“You think so highly of yourself? Why don’t you start your own business if you are so good?” he said sarcastically.
Sarah ducked. He finally understood why William was so bothered by his father. The man didn’t know how to indulge and only cared for his own benefits and ideals.
*You must have seen that I grew up in an orphanage. I got through college through scholarships and part–time jobs. You might ask me why I don’t have enough experience in the field, sol will answer that question for you right now. She paused and looked the interviewers dead in the eye. “I didn’t have time. I was busy trying to survive and study
There was an audible gasp from a female interviewer.
“You speak so Ludely. I don’t think you want the job,” the same woman said pointedly.
Sarah shook her head. “Of course, I want the job. Who wouldn’t? But I can be so candid with you because I know you have no intention of hiring me. If you can’t give me the common courtesy to look interested, then I don’t owe you anything either,”
Another interviewer cleared his throat. “What makes you think the hiring process is rigged? That is a tall claim
Sarah blinked at him innocently. “I had the fortune of going to the story and hearing candidate say proudly that she was the reason the interview was taking place and that the rest weit hete for show.”
There was silence in the room.
“No” Ceorge exclaimed, te banged his closed fist on the table. “There is no rigging in our company.”
Sarah shuupped. “Yes, there is no rigging in the company. But I was not the only one in the bathroom, there were others. I am not sure they feel the same way. Moreover, if you only take something with dur candidate’s background and rest like ber..” the trailed off.
*I am analyzing the situation for you, sir,
said calmly “For the role I am applying for, this is an integral skill
George arched his bow and cased his hand when one of the others in the room tried to stop her. “Then? What do you propuur? Show us what you are capable of ”
A smile tugged on Saralı’s lips. “Easy. A diversity hire. How good is a sob story about an orphan girl with talent who climbs to the top of the company? It is great PI and no one can point a

“I didn’t say you it had to be me, but of course, I would be glad to take up the offer ”
