- 5.
Jake tossed the phone to Liam, storming off.
Liam caught it, his voice smooth.
“Mary, hey, long time no see. Can Sarah
come to the phone?”
Mary, Liam, and I grew up together in the
foster system.
We used to be best friends.
There was a long pause. Then Mary’s voice,
sad.
“Isn’t this the medical genius? How long has it
been? You won’t even call the person who
worked to send you to university a sister?”
<
Liam ignored that, smirking.
“Mary, can I talk to her?”
“Is that for me?” Mary snapped. “Liam, have
you completely lost your mind?”
Liam stopped smiling, his face hardening.
“Mary, I don’t have time for this.”
“Where’s Sarah?”
“You want to see her?” Mary’s voice sounded
strange.
Liam didn’t answer.
Mary laughed, louder and louder.
“You want to see her now? You’re too late.
Where were you all this time?”
Liam didn’t say a thing.
Mary spoke.
“Sarah… she’s probably in a better place.”
The conversation was on speaker, loud and
clear.
The entire place, including the film crew and
everyone online, went silent.
My heart leaped into my throat.
She finally said it.
L
I was dead.
Only Mary stayed with me.
Even after I died, she took care of everything.
She took too much burden for me.
It was good that she spoke out.
I wondered what Mom and Jake would think.
I looked down, unable to face them.
A low laugh broke the silence.
