I looked over to see Jake laughing.

“You went through all this trouble to say that?
Sarah put you up to this, didn’t she?”
Jake shrugged, catching on to the truth.
“She’s something.”
Liam looked down, his hair hiding his eyes.
“A selfish person like her wouldn’t want to
die.”
He sounded mocking, like any worry was a
mistake.
I hung my head.
Right, Liam wanted me dead.
“So what if I did trick you? What about it?”
く
Mary laughed.
“Sarah is happier without you. You think she
wanted to be in that awful family? She hated
it!”
“Why is it always you controlling Sarah? If you
want to find her, you come crawl.”
Mary rattled off an address, then hung up.
Everyone stared at each other.
The director and cameraman exchanged
glances, not daring to move.
The cameras stayed on.
Jake stood there, face blank but the veins
bulging on his hands.

Liam still looked down, unreadable.
“Let’s go, now. See what kind of crazy thing
Sarah is doing.”
My mom’s angry voice came from behind us.
She was coming closer, Lily supporting her.
“Take the family tree with us. We don’t have
people like that in this family.”
Lily looked at the camera, all sad.
“Sarah, I know you’re watching the show.
Please, stop making Mom and Jake angry. It’s
not too late to make things right.”
The old woman was going to cut me out of
the family.
The Smith family never kicked anyone out of
the family.
Jake’s face changed, then finally he said,
“Sarah, this is too much.”
“Time for a lesson.”
I got in the car.
I quietly said to myself.
Sarah.
Why do you expect Jake to stand up for you?
