- 3.
The first thing I did in the lab was check
Jessica’s page, it hadn’t been updated.
It must have been a coincidence, I can finally
focus.
I skipped lunch. The coding got me wired. By
the afternoon, the code was finally running. I
stretched and stared at my screen, bursting
with pride.
Sarah looked at me. “Emily, is the program
running? We should celebrate!”
But I was still nervous, worried Jessica was
about to pull something.
“I don’t mind, whatever is fine for me.”
Sarah nodded.
I waited for Sarah to leave, and I checked
Jessica’s account. I can’t believe what I was
seeing. The code was almost the same.
Ikent refreshing the page
<
I kept refreshing the page.
On the fifth refresh, Jessica added a post, the
post made my heart drop.
The post included a picture, the picture was
the computer showing her own posts with
her,
“I don’t expect an award winning person like
you to follow me, I’m very excited for your
design.”
The picture was taken in the lab. I got cold
sweat.
Everyone was minding their own business,
hard to tell.
The comments were exploding.
“Who is she? The smarty that does their work
at the library? Can’t compare to our Jessica.”
“Jessica, watch out! Someone will take
advantage of the code that you’re uploading.
It was all starting to make sense.
“Emily, food’s here, you look a little scared?”
Sarah said.
“I’m fine, I’m a little tired.”
I realized what I had to do. If nobody wants
me to win, I’ll drop out.
It was the best way.
With my skills, dropping out won’t affect my
Г
ability to work for a large company.
I called Sarah to tell her the news, Sarah tried
to convince me but I insisted and she
accepted, Sarah told me to get some rest.
I bought a plane ticket to Thailand.
Brain called me, “I’ve heard that you’re
dropping out from the team.
“How do you know?”
We finished and I was nervous, it was getting
weird.
Brain blamed me,
“You’re so irresponsible, what about your
team, don’t you care what they think?”
く
“Brian, what about me?”
Brian was stuttering, “What about you?”
“I’m dropping out of the relationship.”
I hung up.
I packed my things.
At the door I see Brian, Jessica and her team
walking towards me.
Jessica’s eyes were red, “Emily, you’re
misunderstanding! I hope that you can
continue the competition, I really want to
compete.”
Brian added, “Please continue, I’ll be here for
Г
“You can’t leave me!”
Jessica’s team was all talking to themselves,
“She must know she can’t win, so she’s just
quitting.”
“I know right, Jessica is just talented.”
I don’t care, and I bypass them to the airport, the things that happened to me last time
were worse.
I’m on the streets, people are spitting on me.
