“I’ll take the cab.” Liesel’s nausea had settled after she had drunk the orange juice.
“Are you sure? Even if you’re gonna be late?” Jacob raised his brows at her, which to Liesel, felt like mockery.
She glanced at her watch, learning she had only two hours left until the ribbon–cutting ceremony. It would take at least one hour and 30 minutes to arrive in Dove District even if she took the cab.
“Well, I’ll gladly take up your offer then, Mr. Ford.”
Then, Jacob brought up the matter from last night. “Elijah called you last night. I found it too noisy, so I switched off your phone.”
“Oh. No wonder Chelsea didn’t give me a single call after my whole night out,” Liesel thought.
“Yeah, he can be,” she replied with a random excuse.
He grunted in response. “He is.”
Liesel looked at him in silence. She was utterly speechless.
Once she finished her breakfast, Jacob headed to the door quietly without notifying her it was time to leave. Frantic, she quickly went to change her clothes, grabbed her bag and phone, and followed suit.
They would be lucky enough to arrive at the event on time. She had no time to choose her outfit, but luckily, Jacob came prepared. What surprised her was his choice of a red dress.
At last, Liesel entered his car in her long dress. She pinched the hem of her dress and descended into silence. Turning her head, she shot him a glance.
At that moment, Jacob sported a pair of glasses, which concealed his deep and unreadable. eyes. His side profile was near perfect, like the handiwork of an angel.
When he wasn’t wearing glasses, his gaze was sharp and intense. With them on, he took on a more refined air. However, after spending more time with him, she preferred to describe: him as a “refined scoundrel.”
Time after time, Liesel stole glances at him and felt her heart skip a beat. Then, she withdrew her gaze nervously and focused on the clock on the monitor instead.
Right when they were about to arrive in Dove District, she finally asked, “Why a red dress?”
‘Cause you like red.”
Liesel took his casual reply to heart completely. “He remembered I like red and specially

prepared me a red dress. How rare of a gesture she lamented.
She felt her heart tightening and her eyes were a little moist. She contemplated, “Would last three years have been happier if he had known me better? No–that’d only make me sadder when we divorced. You know what? It’s for the better.”

Maintaining her silence, she tossed these thoughts to the back of her mind.
As they neared the resort, Liesel realized they were right on time. She pointed at one of the junctions and said, “Drop me off there. I’ll walk ”
Jacob shot her a cold glare, which prompted her to zip her mouth. She instinctively explained, “There are people at the company’s entrance, and they’ll gossip about us.” He calmly drove past the junction she had pointed at with no intention of slowing down. However, Liesel expected it as he was stubborn and never listened to anyone’s advice. She was at a loss for words. She looked at him for a bit, then eventually took the high road. “Drop me off at the resort’s entrance then.”
His gaze darkened as he glanced at her. “As you wish.”
