Chapter 45
When Randy heard that Maris had a bunch of embroidered scarves, his eyes lit up with greed.
But then he remembered Brynn had given Maris all those scarves and not a single one to him, he felt a twinge of jealousy. “Humph, that ungrateful girl must’ve been hiding her identity just to make us look bad; he grumbled.

Kylie, always observant, noticed Maris’s expression change. Worried that Brynn being Ms. Vera Stitch might sway Maris, she casually said. “But Brynn never went to college. Where did she learn embroidery?”
Maris’s face clouded with doubt.
Kylie quickly added, “Mom, Dad, what if she just taught herself a little bit and managed to fool Master Lefevre? Maybe she’s not really Ms. Vera Stitch at all?”
“Could be…” Maris nodded, looking thoughtful.
Seeing Maris so easily swayed, Randy sneered inwardly, ‘All women are stupid. How can Master Lefevre be so blind?
He didn’t like Brynn anyway, so he wasn’t about to defend her.
The banquet hall was glittering with gold and filled with guests.
When people saw that Declan personally escorted Brynn in, those who didn’t know her were instantly curious. They wondered, Who is this girl that has the privilege of being welcomed by Mr. Harper himself?”
The municipal officials, however, recognized her instantly. They had done their research when the President arrived. This was the First Lady.
They wanted to impress her, but Declan wasn’t giving any hints about her identity, so no one dared to break the silence.
It wasn’t until Declan introduced Brynn to them that the officials started showering her with praise.
“Ms. Everett, you’re truly remarkable! Even Mr. Harper seems to hold you in high regard. Your future is bound to be bright,” one of them said.
“Yeah, Ms. Everett, you’re beautiful and talented. You’re really something,” another added.
Everyone else was shocked to see Brynn win the approval of these bigwigs.
They had seen these officials barely acknowledge anyone before, but here they were, praising Brynn.
If it were anyone else, they’d probably be trembling with excitement, but Brynn remained poised and humble.
“Thank you all for your kind words. I still have a lot to learn from all of you,” Brynn said with a slight nod and raised her wine glass.
Her grace and composure
made the officials even more respectful, and they raised their glasses in agreement.
Meanwhile, Kylie was being ignored. People who were close enough to recognize her even made an effort to distance themselves.
Watching Brynn thrive while she was left out, Kylie’s jealousy boiled over.
“Chase, do you think she’s doing this on purpose to get back at us?” Kylie complained, tugging on Chase’s arm.
Chase frowned slightly and casually removed her hand from his arm.

Maris, seeing how cold their reception was, anxiously turned to Chase. “Chase, since you’re part of the Johnson family like the President, could you introduce us to him?
Chase, still annoyed from earlier, replied curtly. “I’m not that close to the President.”
Not close? How could that be? Maris thought.
She pressed on. “But you’re his cousin, right? How could you not be close to him?
The mention of this made Chase think of the fake invitation incident and how Kylie had tried to drag him into it. His expression grew even colder.
He wanted to get away from the Everetts and was thinking of an excuse to leave when he noticed Brynn heading toward the
restroom.
Tll be right back. I need to use the bathroom,” Chase said, walking away.
Kylie couldn’t follow him into the men’s restroom, so she stayed put.
As Chase walked out of the restroom, he bumped into Brynn coming out of the ladies‘ room.
Seeing her in her elegant gown and perfect makeup, he was momentarily dazed. Memories of their past flooded his mind.
“Chase, I bought a bouquet of lilies today. Aren’t they beautiful?”
“Look at this bear–shaped sandwich. Isn’t it funny?”
His thoughts slowly drifted back to reality, but the woman in front of him no longer had the same sparkle in her eyes. Chase regretted it. He regretted letting her go and wished he had rushed to the wedding that day.
