“I was too hasty earlier. I didn’t think it would turn out like this. Daisy’s always been in poor health, and I was worried you might hurt her. I couldn’t take the risk–if something happened to her, I wouldn’t be able to explain it to anyone at the company. I swear, when I rushed over, I didn’t see you. If I had, I never would have collided with you. The child you’re carrying is my flesh and blood. I could never hurt my own kid, no matter what.”
The surgical incision still throbbed with pain, but as he poured out his excuses, the first thing he focused on was defending his own mistake.
He didn’t ask if I was in pain from the surgery, didn’t ask how I was feeling, didn’t ask where the baby was.
I looked at his face, filled with concern, and a bitter smile pulled at my lips. Tears slipped down my cheeks, soaking into my collar. My heart felt like it was frozen.
“What’s wrong, Alison? Honey, are you okay? Please don’t scare me. Are you feeling unwell? Hang on. I’ll call the doctor right now.”
“Wait.”
I stopped him, and he looked at me in confusion.
“No need. Let’s just get a divorce, Stephen.
“Is it because of that turkey you didn’t get to eat? Alison, don’t blow this out of proportion.”
“The turkey was just the tipping point, but I’m really tired. I can choose not to blame her, and I can choose not to blame you, but please, just don’t show up in front of me again. Not in this life, not in the next. I don’t want to see you ever again.”
Maybe he didn’t expect me to speak so decisively. Our eyes locked, and he froze in place.
Then, his phone rang.
He pulled out his phone and glanced at the caller ID, his expression shifting uneasily.
I forced a sarcastic smile and turned away from him.
“Go ahead. I told you, I don’t want to see you again. Who you’re with doesn’t matter to me.
After five years of marriage and love, I didn’t even want a proper goodbye.
The rush with which we had gotten together was matched only by the messiness of how we were now splitting apart.
I thought for sure he’d drop everything when he saw Daisy’s call.
But this time, he hit the “Decline” button.

Chapter 8
“I know I’ve made you suffer today, but I promise, this is the last time. We still have three kids. I’ll take care of things with Daisy. She’s really just someone I see as a sister. Sometimes, when I look at her, I can’t help but want to protect her–it’s like seeing the younger version of you.”
As he spoke, I looked at him, a mocking smile stretching across my face.
“Stephen, I’m still alive. You don’t need
with me. Don’t use me as an excuse foo look for me in someone who has nothing to do
your infidelity. It disgusts me.”
Seeing the unwavering coldness in my gaze, he finally lost his patience.
“Alison, how could you think that? You know I’m not that kind of person! We’ve been together for five years. When have I ever betrayed you? This is your fault. If you hadn’t been so petty, none of this would’ve happened. You could’ve just swallowed your pride and ended things. But you had to make it worse, and now here we are. I never wanted this.”
I had never felt so exhausted.
As he threw every bit of blame onto me, I couldn’t bring myself to explain anymore.
He opened his mouth again to continue defending himself, but his phone rang once more. This time, without another word, he glanced at me in disappointment and left the room.
I dialed my lawyer’s number.
“I want a divorce. I want all my assets back.”
“If you withdraw the funds, Mr. Greene’s company will go bankrupt and will be burdened with massive debt. Are you sure you want to do this?”
I replied, my voice icy, “Yes. I’m sure.”
