Chapter 9
The day before going to the courthouse, Kylie contacted me through someone else.
She invited me to sit at the café near the school gate.
I went and saw her sitting in the spot where we used to sit often. I felt calm inside.
“I ordered the banana latte that you used to love.”
These days she probably didn’t have a good time, her complexion was quite haggard, even her outfit revealed a hint of haste.
I put down the bag and went straight to the point, saying, “You can speak directly.”
“Jude, what do you plan to do in the future?”
Her eyes were sincere and concerned, as if she really cared about me.
I shattered her disguise with a single blow: “Why don’t you worry about yourself instead? Can the Carlson family accept you?”
She clenched her fists and said, “I never thought about competing with you for Mrs. Carlson’s position. I know you’re not short of money, but you grew up in a loveless environment, and I worry that you might do something foolish after your divorce.”
I felt like I heard a funny joke.
“Don’t worry, even if I did something foolish, it wouldn’t be your nanny’s daughter who would inherit my billions.”
Her face turned pale, but she tried to appear calm.
“What do you mean?”
I leaned closer to the edge of the table and whispered in her ear, “You and your mom probably never expected this, right? Our dad, so heartless, heartless enough to not even recognize his own daughter.”
Kylie suddenly turned pale and trembled all over. “When did you find out?”
Thanks to you, I only found out recently. Poor your so–called father, he never knew until his death that his only daughter was someone else’s child.
I have been thinking a lot recently. No wonder since I was young, whatever I did, you had to imitate me. You always tried to suppress me and yet, in front of others, you always tried to be more likable than me.
“Even Kendrick, you had to compete with me.”
Some things, if they are yours, they are yours. If they are not yours, no matter how much you shout, they will never become yours.
“You see, I gave it all to you, did you get what you wanted?”
Kylie finally tore off her hypocritical mask and growled at me, “So what! He was only with you for his own benefit, he truly loves me! Just because he can’t marry me now doesn’t mean I won’t become Mrs. Carlson in the future!”
I calmly watched her furious appearance, suddenly thought of something, and smiled.
“By the way, there’s something you might want to know. Recently, during the property division, I found out that many years ago he bought multiple insurance policies for himself, and he listed me as the beneficiary.”
“I was a little flattered by all of it.”
I silently admired Kylie’s pale face as she spoke slowly.
Originally, when Mr. Carlson loved someone, he would also go to great lengths to provide all the support for another person. It truly moved me.
Kylie opened her mouth, but all she could manage was a feeble retort she herself didn’t want to believe: “You lied to me, Kendrick wouldn’t…”
I ignored her and got up to leave.
After getting on the car, I didn’t leave immediately, but instead looked at the school through the window for a long time.
Once, here existed my most beautiful memories, now appearing incredibly ironic.
I was like a bystander, watching my past self laughing and walking hand in hand with my boyfriend and friends.
Maybe there was a moment when they would forever exist in a certain time and space, pure and beautiful.
